Over the weekend, information appeared on the web about a pair of new patents that could indicate the direction Apple is taking. One of them concerns a new design of the Lightning connector, which would offer a new solution that will have complete water resistance, the second patent then solves the often discussed problems regarding the new butterfly keyboards in MacBoocíc and their resistance to dirt, dust, etc.

Let's start with the new Lightning connector design. This patent filing, which saw the light of day this weekend, shows how Apple could improve the water resistance of its devices. Apple introduced the first officially waterproof iPhone in 2015, in the form of the iPhone 6S, which had an IP67 certification. The new design of the Lightning connector could help Apple with a higher degree of certification.

As you can see in the image below, the end of the connector has been greatly redesigned. There is an expanding part that fills the space inside the port and subsequently seals it. Thanks to this, water and moisture should not get inside. It is likely that it will be a piece of silicone or similar material.

The second patent is of a slightly older date, but it has now become public. The original application was filed at the end of 2016, and the patent concerns an innovative design of so-called butterfly keyboards, which should be more resistant to dirt. It is precisely dirt that tends to damage new keyboards, a phenomenon that a large number of users complain about in the case of new MacBooks.

All it takes is a small crumb or a firmer speck of dust that fits under the key and interferes with the lifting mechanism or disrupts the operation of the individual keys in some other way. The new solution mentioned in the patent should adjust the bed for storing the individual keys, within which there should be another special membrane that will prevent unwanted particles from entering the space under the keyboard. In both cases mentioned above, it is a practical solution that many users of both iPhones and iPads, as well as MacBooks, would certainly welcome. Charging in wet weather probably doesn't bother that many users, but quite a few users have problems with the keyboards of the new Macs. Are you one of them?
