Apple is working on updating the iPhone system, which will already bear the designation iOS 17.4. Currently, it has already released its second beta, including to the public. The main thing here is, of course, adapting to the DMA law, but we have already written a lot about that. So here we highlight other news, of which there are really many.

Just in a nutshell: The beta versions of iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 17.4 already introduce a number of changes for users in the European Union that enable alternative app stores and alternative payment methods. There are new options for choosing the default browser, NFC has opened up not only to banks but also to other financial institutions, and browsers are not required to use WebKit. In addition, Apple will also release streaming platform games on iOS. The iOS 17.4 update should be released in March, probably in its first week.

Live stopwatch activity

It's a question why it had to take so long, however, the iOS 17.4 update adds live activity to the Clock app and its Stopwatch feature. Thus, after launching them and closing the application, the timing is displayed both on the Dynamic Island and on the lock screen. There is also an option to stop or resume the measurement.

Clock widget

The Clock application already offers a number of widgets that you can put on your desktop. There are also three named as Město, but in all cases they are classic dials. There will also be a new Digital City widget with a digital time indicator.

C

The new generation of CarPlay is scheduled to launch in the US as early as 2024, and the code in iOS 17.4 refers to several of its new applications.

  • Car camera: This application will display the image from the rear camera of the vehicle.
  • Charging: For electric vehicles, it will be possible to display the battery level, charging status, time remaining until the battery is fully charged and other data.
  • Climate & Environment: This will provide access to the vehicle's climate controls within CarPlay and allow you to adjust the temperature of the air conditioning or heating, fan speed, heated seats, heated steering wheel, etc.
  • Closure: This app will show if any of the vehicle doors are open and can also show vehicle warning symbols.
  • Media: Enables access to control FM and AM radio stations within CarPlay and other media options.
  • Tire pressure: The application will display the air pressure in each of the vehicle's tires and provide low and high pressure and flat tire alerts.
  • Drive: This will be a range of data related to driving, including average vehicle speed, fuel consumption or energy efficiency, total time and distance traveled during the trip and other data.

There is still an image present in the iOS 17.4 beta that suggests that CarPlay will likely display a "Farewell" screen after the driver turns off the vehicle.

shareplay

SharePlay music control extends to HomePod and Apple TV with iOS 17.4 and tvOS 17.4. Thanks to this feature, all your family and friends can control the music that is playing on ‌HomePod‌ or ‌even on Apple TV‌ if you give them permission.

The beta adds new emoticons that include a lime, a brown mushroom, a phoenix, a broken chain, and a smiley waving in both directions to indicate a yes or no answer. It is part of the Unicode 15.1 update, which was approved in September 2023.
