Earlier this month, we learned that Apple was working on a new iPad Air and iPad mini. That's no surprise considering we actually expected to see them later this fall. But Apple has moved their presentation to Q1 2023, and to make matters worse, it is said to be planning to introduce another 12,9" iPad Air. And we ask why?

This was first reported by 9to5Mac magazine, and now a recently published report from DigiTimes confirms it. Apple is reportedly developing a 12,9" iPad Air that will still use LCD instead of mini-LED. After all, LCD also offers the basic Air, up to 12,9" iPad Pro has the just mentioned mini-LED technology. Apple would thus provide customers with the same size device, which would of course be shortened in its equipment.

Since reports from DigiTimes are often based on sources from the supply chain, one can really believe that Apple is planning something like this big iPad Air. Currently, Apple does not sell any product with a 12,9-inch LCD panel. By increasing the size of the iPad Air, the company would divide the offer in this series in the same way as it has divided it with the iPad Pro.

Portfolio unification or just a step aside?

Maybe that's her goal. To offer larger and smaller devices of the common and professional series. After all, we also see it with iPhones, where we have the basic iPhone and the one with the nickname Plus, which have the same display diagonals as the Pro models. It may be true that not everyone needs the functions offered by the 12,9" iPad Pro, but they simply want a large display. So Apple will probably give it to them, and for less money, of course.

Tablets don't go on sale, and Apple will probably try to reverse it somehow. But if that's a good way to go, it doesn't look likely now. Current information on sales of the 15" MacBook Air also speaks of a fiasco, when it is quite possible that the larger iPad Air will follow. Although Apple still sells the most tablets in the segment, its main draw is of course iPhones.
