Which Apple Pencil for which iPad? Do you know it? Apple pleased with the price of the new product, which it presented yesterday in the form of a press release, but that's all. Many of us are confused not only by its functionality, but also by its compatibility and, in fact, by the name itself, which does not contain a generation designation.

It was half and half whether Apple would introduce new iPads. In the end, it didn't happen, and this year it shouldn't even happen anymore, because it wouldn't make sense to show them to the world separately from the accessories that are intended for them. So that's what we got, but in a completely different form than we might have hoped for. We don't have the 3rd generation Apple Pencil here or any special replacement nibs. It's just a certain mix between the first and second generation, which, although it ranks between them, has the lowest price tag of the entire trio. But we know why.

A pig to know it

So – Apple has two graphical representations of what each Apple Pencil can do and which iPad is compatible with which. It's not that clear-cut and it really depends on which company's tablet you have and which company's stylus you can use with it. Apple Pencil (2nd generation) for CZK 3, it is the most equipped in terms of functions, but it does not work with the iPad 890 or 9, which Apple still officially sells, including in its Online Store. It is compatible with the following models:

  • 12,9-inch iPad Pro: 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th generations
  • 11-inch iPad Pro: 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th generation
  • iPad Air: 4th and 5th generation
  • iPadmini: 6th generation

Apple Pencil (1nd generation) for 2 CZK, it is suitable for drawing on the 990th generation iPad because it has pressure-sensitive input, but it does not work with the currently sold iPad mini, Air or Pro models. It is also the only Apple Pencil that works with the 10th generation iPad, which we can still find in the Apple range. This is the last iPad model that still offers a Home Button. Apple Pencil 9 compatibility is as follows:

  • 12,9-inch iPad Pro: 1th and 2th generation
  • 10,5-inch iPad Pro
  • 9,7-inch iPad Pro
  • iPad Air: 3rd generation
  • iPadmini: 5th generation
  • iPad: 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th generation (USB‑C adapter required here)

Nový Apple Pencil (USB-C) it will cost you a pleasant 2 CZK. But it lacks pressure sensitivity, so it is intended more for writing, and it is its clear limitation that also makes it so much cheaper. Support for holding the Apple Pencil above the display on the iPad Pro doesn't make up for it. It works with all iPads currently sold with the only exception being the 290th generation iPad. Compatibility is as follows:

  • 12,9-inch iPad Pro: 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th generations
  • 11-inch iPad Pro: 1rd, 2th, 3th and 4th generations
  • iPad Air: 4th and 5th generation
  • iPadmini: 6th generation
  • iPad: 10th generation

What took so long to develop?

It was enough to be a year faster and it would be much more transparent. Just introduce the Apple Pencil (USB-C) with the 10th generation iPad and it's done. Apple would not have to state the reduction and would not have to be the target of justified ridicule. The iPad 10 would simply not have support for the 1st generation Apple Pencil, when the customer would not have a device with USB-C but an accessory with Lightning, which cannot even be charged without the necessary reduction.

It is true that the situation will become much more transparent when the 9th generation iPad drops from the menu. But it could easily take another two years. The 1st generation Apple Pencil will be with us for some time, also because all those who already own an older generation of iPad can buy it. And will the 3rd generation Apple Pencil ever come? Now that seems unlikely. Perhaps it would be more logical to introduce the Apple Pencil Pro, which will basically reflect the capabilities of the 2nd generation, with the fact that we will only get those exchangeable specific tips.
