To promote the finale of the popular sci-fi series Silo, Apple shared the entire first episode on Twitter. This social network makes it possible to share even longer videos, which Apple has caught on to and thus lures in its surprising hit. The Academy is tightening the conditions for awarding the Oscars
The rules that can affect the possibility of including films from streaming services, and thus also Apple TV+, in the list of nominations for the best film of the Oscars, have currently been significantly tightened. Apple's Heartbeat won Best Picture in 2022, making history as no other VOD film had done so before. Under current rules, a weekly theatrical release in one of six US cities is required to be nominated. But this rule will change from the 97th year of the Academy Awards in 2024.
A week in one of the six selected cities is still valid, but after that the film must go into extended screening for at least one week in ten of the 50 most popular US markets, but no later than 45 days after the premiere week. And why are the rules so strict? Bill Kramer, the director of the academy, commented on this: "In support of our mission to celebrate and honor the art and science of filmmaking, we hope this expanded distribution will increase the film's visibility around the world and encourage audiences to experience the art form in an appropriate cinematic environment." Recently, there has been a lot of talk about the fact that no one actually knows the nominated films, because they are hidden under the amount of content on streaming platforms and thus become more visible.
