Over the past few years, the names PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo have dominated the market. However, some speculate that the unconfirmed but expected Apple TV may change that.

Nat Brown, former Microsoft engineer and founder of the Xbox project, wrote on his personal blog about how Microsoft (mis)handled the Xbox project. Brown wrote that the only reason Xbox is so successful is not because it's good, but because what Sony and Nintendo are offering is even worse.

According to Brown, Microsoft has failed dramatically when it comes to indie games. In his article, he criticizes Microsoft for making it almost impossible for indie developers to get their game on Xbox and then promote and sell it.

"Why can't I program an Xbox game using $100 tools, my Windows laptop and test it at home and on my friends Xbox?. Microsoft is crazy not to allow independent developers, but also a generation of loyal children and teenagers, to create games for consoles under normal circumstances.”

And it is in this segment that Apple can come and dominate it, says Brown. Apple already has a very successful system for publishing and promoting applications that is easy for developers and could cause the collapse of the main game consoles of Microsoft (Xbox 360), Sony (PlayStation 3) and Nintendo (Wii and Wii U).

“When I can, I will be the first to start making apps for Apple TV. And I know that I will eventually make money from it. I would also create games for Xbox if I could and if I was sure that I could make money from it.”

At the moment we don't know anything about the new Apple TV and if there will even be a new and better Apple TV (apart from the components). We don't even know anything about the new Xbox. However, if Brown is right, Microsoft and Sony should do something about their new consoles, especially regarding the treatment of indie developers.
