Over the past few years, the names PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo have dominated the market. However, some speculate that the unconfirmed but expected Apple TV may change that.
Nat Brown, former Microsoft engineer and founder of the Xbox project, wrote on his personal blog about how Microsoft (mis)handled the Xbox project. Brown wrote that the only reason Xbox is so successful is not because it's good, but because what Sony and Nintendo are offering is even worse.
According to Brown, Microsoft has failed dramatically when it comes to indie games. In his article, he criticizes Microsoft for making it almost impossible for indie developers to get their game on Xbox and then promote and sell it.
"Why can't I program an Xbox game using $100 tools, my Windows laptop and test it at home and on my friends Xbox?. Microsoft is crazy not to allow independent developers, but also a generation of loyal children and teenagers, to create games for consoles under normal circumstances.”
And it is in this segment that Apple can come and dominate it, says Brown. Apple already has a very successful system for publishing and promoting applications that is easy for developers and could cause the collapse of the main game consoles of Microsoft (Xbox 360), Sony (PlayStation 3) and Nintendo (Wii and Wii U).
“When I can, I will be the first to start making apps for Apple TV. And I know that I will eventually make money from it. I would also create games for Xbox if I could and if I was sure that I could make money from it.”
At the moment we don't know anything about the new Apple TV and if there will even be a new and better Apple TV (apart from the components). We don't even know anything about the new Xbox. However, if Brown is right, Microsoft and Sony should do something about their new consoles, especially regarding the treatment of indie developers.
I think it's completely real.. the ipad 4 has more than enough graphics and computing power and I think the performance will increase even more, as already said, the ecosystem is here and it would completely fit into the entire Apple ecosystem..
But for now, Apple TV is still "television", it will hardly replace the game console with applications.
so when will appletv replace game consoles? if you add a controller to it and make it possible to run all kinds of applications that will run under iOS and look, that's what we're talking about here.. it's completely appropriate for now and I think it will change in the future, maybe even with a failed attempt, but who knows.. maybe just the designers of this device..
Somewhere I saw rumors about a new apple TV that will get an A5X chip, which is enough for almost all games in full HD.
I have both a PS3 and an AppleTV and comparing these systems is really nonsense. There is no way the current AppleTV can threaten the PS3 in terms of gaming. Likewise, the PS3 won't threaten the AppleTV because it will never stream my iTunes library.
By the way… Sony PS3 runs some apps from smartphones under the “mini” group. They are very cheap, but not much on a console. Comparing games like Far Cry 3 or Uncharted 3 with any action game for a smartphone (like Infinity Blade) is really ridiculous.
Nobody is talking about today, but about new consoles and what Apple will bring and if they will take advantage of it.
I really don't believe that Apple will significantly improve AppleTV in the next 1-2 years. In its current form, AppleTV has been around for a few years and nothing new is on the horizon, which makes me really sad.
In my opinion, the main problem is that the touch control of games and applications from the iPhone cannot be applied to the TV, and nothing else Apple has yet. It would have to come with a gamepad-type controller like my playstation, and then these apps would hardly be compatible with existing touch devices on iOS. Rather, they could be based on OS X.
In a few days, the PS4 should be presented, and soon the new Xbox will certainly be introduced. The performance of AppleTV would have to increase x times to be even remotely competitive with these systems.
Wait for Orbis (PS4) Brown. He will be so good that your head will spin and your ego will flatten.
Well, what if Apple runs the games on a remote server and the AppleTV will just project them on the TV
I have everything from Apple, including Apple TV, but I was tired of waiting for a jailbreak and last week I bought a dongle MK 1500 and Android in Alga for 802. It has a dual-core processor, quad-core graphics with 3D acceleration, a USB hub can be connected to it and all possible peripherals on it, including a camera and microphone for Skype, a wireless keyboard and mouse, and an external HDD. It communicates via bluetooth with the Wii remote or wireless PS3 controller, which replaces the touch screen in a number of games. For CZK 20, I downloaded a utility from Google Play, thanks to which it looks like an Apple TV for devices with AirPlay support, and I can stream to it from my iPhone and iPad. My friend has an Android phone, and she installed a utility on it that allows her to stream on Apple TV, or something that looks like that....
I gave a fan of Apple toys, but ... Apple TV doesn't overpower anything anymore. Unfortunately.
