What to do if your Mac can't verify an app? The macOS operating system allows applications and games to be installed from sources other than the official App Store. But sometimes, even after downloading an app from a trusted source, you may have problems installing it because the Mac was unable to verify that the app is free of malware.

For Mac users, the message about the inability to verify the application is nothing new. This message may greet you when you try to open an application downloaded from the Internet on your macOS computer. The warning message is an Apple security measure designed to keep you safe and prevent potentially malicious software from running on your Mac. It's accompanied by another message that says the app can't be opened because it's from an unidentified developer.

Even if it's not exactly a bug, fixing it becomes paramount because it can be quite annoying, especially when you know the app is safe but still encounter this warning and can't find a way to remove it. This means you can't open the app until Gatekeeper (that's the literal name of the feature) lets you in.

What to do if your Mac can't verify an app

  • Fortunately, there are quick and easy methods to bypass this warning and open any app.
  • Open the Finder and navigate to the application. It will be located in the folder Application, eventual Downloaded files.
  • Then right-click (or Ctrl-click) the app instead of double-clicking it. In the context menu, click an option Open.
  • Another warning message will appear, but this time it will also include the option to open the application. This way Gatekeeper is bypassed and the application opens.

It is necessary to keep in mind that this method of opening applications should be applied strictly only in the case of software whose trustworthiness you are 100% sure. If you still can't open the app using the above methods, try deleting it and downloading it again. Sometimes the warning message may not disappear if the application is corrupted or its signature has changed.
