With the iPhone 15 and Apple Watch Series 9, Apple also introduced FineWoven, a completely new material that is ideal for various accessories and also has an environmental impact. But Apple criminally misses its potential.

It is supposed to be a new skin that this material is similar to and that it replaces. Leather is carbon intensive, but FineWoven is good for the planet by containing more than 68% recycled post-consumer material. It's made from durable microtwill and feels like soft suede, which is leather treated by sanding on its reverse side. FineWoven is shiny and soft, looks quite luxurious too, it just makes a cheap 'whistling' sound when you run your fingers over it.

You can see many cases of its damage on the Internet, but there is no need to worry about it, because with respect to the degradation of the leather itself, FineWoven is subjectively more resistant. After all, we have it in the editorial office and wear it quite regularly without it suffering (with regard to the cover and the wallet). Maybe it's too early for that, and time will tell if it will "take off" from the shell in the same way as it did with skin and is with silicone.

Where is FineWoven used and where could it be?

Apple only uses FineWoven material to make certain accessories, although it has replaced the entire leather portfolio with it. So we have covers for iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, there is also a FineWoven wallet with MagSafe for iPhone and two types of strap for Apple Watch (magnetic pull and strap with a modern buckle). Leather has also been replaced by FineWoven on the AirTag key ring.

But Apple previously also offered leather covers for MacBooks, but they dropped out of the portfolio even before the arrival of the new material. So the company could continue this series again. Covers for AirPods are also offered directly (in the case of AirPods Max, directly with their Smart Case) and, last but not least, Smart Folio for iPads. Those Apple offers for many generations of its tablet, but they are only polyurethane.

So we hear little, if anything, from Apple about FineWoven. However, since this is supposed to be an appropriately expanded material in the future, it is certainly a shame.
