Yesterday, Apple showed us new operating systems that once again bring a number of new features and changes. Immediately after the end of the presentation, we informed you via articles about the main news of the individual systems. But now we're going to dig a little deeper and shine a light on everything about macOS 12 Monterey and its new features.

FaceTime

shareplay

Undoubtedly, the main novelty of yesterday's keynote was the SharePlay function, which arrived in the FaceTime application on all systems. Thanks to this, the apple tool for video calls moves several levels forward, as it is now possible to play music from Apple Music with friends/colleagues, create a queue of songs, play series (not only) from  TV+, watch funny videos on TikTok, etc. .

Screen sharing

An option that Apple users have been clamoring for for a long time is now finally here - the ability to share the screen. The FaceTime application will thus be able to be used much better. In addition, you don't have to share the entire screen, but it is enough for you to select a given window so that others can see only what they have.

Spatial audio

When you have a group call in FaceTime, where the individual participants are displayed next to each other, in macOS Monterey you can perfectly recognize who is talking. Apple is introducing Spatial Audio, which will simulate a more realistic and natural sound. The latter is typical for classic face-to-face conversations, while it can disappear during calls.

Microphone modes

In some cases, you may also encounter unpleasant background noises, which may make it difficult to hear you very well. In such a case, new mods can help you, which have the task of partially reducing this problem. Specifically, Voice Isolation minimizes ambient noise so that only your voice stands out, and Wide Spectrum leaves ambient noise unchanged.

Portrait mode and dividing the participants into a table

In the new macOS system, Apple was inspired by the Portrait mode from the iPhone, which is made possible by the sophisticated M1 chip. This allows FaceTime to automatically blur the background behind you, while keeping you in focus. In the case of group calls, individual participants will be divided into tiles in the table. However, in order for you to have an overview of who is currently speaking, the panel with the currently speaking participant in the call will be automatically highlighted.

Multi-platform solution also for conferences

One of the most fundamental changes in FaceTime is the option, thanks to which users with Windows or Android will be able to indirectly use this typical apple application. In that case, you just need to copy the link for the respective call and send it to your friends or colleagues. Even so, all communication is end-to-end encrypted, so you don't have to worry about your privacy and security. For conference purposes, you can even schedule a FaceTime call and send out the appropriate link before it starts.

News

Shared with You and a collection of photos

A new feature called Shared with You has now arrived in the native Messages app, which groups links, images and other content shared with you into a special section, so you'll never lose them again. Plus, in programs like Photos, Safari, Podcasts, and Apple TV, you'll immediately see shared content by who recommended it to you, and you'll also find the option to quickly reply without having to go back to Messages. The change also comes when someone sends you multiple photos at once. These are automatically sorted into an elegant-looking collection.

Safari

Address bar

When you think about it, the address bar is where you usually start every time you start your browser. Apple has now realized this, and therefore greatly simplified it and changed its design. At the same time, you will have a number of other great functions at your fingertips.

Card groups

For easier and better work with individual cards, it will now be possible to group them into groups. You will then be able to name these groups as you wish, edit them and switch between them in various ways. A huge advantage is that with the help of drag-and-drop, it is possible to drag the entire group to, for example, Mail and share it immediately. There is also automatic synchronization - what you do on the Mac, you will see immediately on, for example, the iPhone.

Focus mode

With the arrival of macOS Monterey, you will also get a brand new Focus mode, which should logically make it easier to concentrate at work, for example. In this case, you can choose which notifications you want to receive, or from whom, and you can therefore work undisturbed. There will be several variants to choose from and, of course, there will be an option to create your own mode. In addition, the active mode will be activated across all your Apple products and will also be visible to your contacts within iMessage.

QuickNote

I'm sure you know it very well yourself. Sometimes an extremely interesting thought occurs to you, and you have to write it down immediately so that you don't forget it later. That's exactly why Apple brings the Quick Note function, which implements this idea into the system. It will now be possible to record your various thoughts and plans immediately, wherever you are. You can then access the so-called quick notes via Notes, where you can also categorize them using tags.

universal control

Another interesting novelty is the so-called Universal Control, or an interesting way to work across various Apple products at the same time. In this case, for example, you can use one mouse and keyboard to work on your Mac and iPad at the same time. Simply move the cursor from one display to another, and everything works smoothly, without the slightest hiccups. At the same time, it is possible to drag and drop some content from one Mac to another. Alternatively, write on a Mac and watch the text appear on the iPad. Everything works without the need for adjustment.

AirPlay to Mac

Have you ever thought that you would like to mirror, for example, your iPhone/iPad to your Mac, or use it as an AirPlay speaker? In that case, you were unfortunately out of luck. Although mirroring was possible in a rather inconvenient way through QuickTime Player, now a full-fledged alternative is finally coming - the AirPlay to Mac function. With its help, it will be possible to broadcast content without problems, or to present something you have on your iPhone to others.

Live text

Macs can now deal with the text that is written on the pictures taken. In this case, it is enough to open the image, select the Live Text option and then you will be able to mark the passage you want to work with. The given text can then be copied, for example, or in the case of a phone number, dial it directly and open the address in Maps. But the function does not support Czech.

Shortcuts on Mac

Another innovation in which Apple listened to the pleas of apple lovers is the arrival of Shortcuts on Mac. In macOS 12 Monterey, the native Shortcuts application will arrive, which will already contain a comprehensive gallery of elementary shortcuts. You will of course be able to create others according to your own needs. You will then be able to launch them via the Dock, menu bar, Finder, Spotlight, or via Siri. Even their simple sharing can please.

Privacy

In short, Apple cares about the privacy of apple growers. At least this is proven by the constant innovations that it implements in its operating systems, in which even the latest macOS is no exception. This time, the giant from Cupertino was inspired by last year's iOS 14, after which it added a simple dot to the Mac, which always shows whether the camera or microphone is currently being used. You will then be able to see which applications have used them in the Control Center. Another interesting new feature is Mail Privacy Protection. This feature in native Mail hides your IP address, making it impossible for the sender to associate your address with other online activity based on address and location.

iCloud +

To make matters worse, Apple has decided to strengthen user privacy and security right at the cloud level by introducing iCloud+. In this case, the function for anonymous web browsing through the Safari browser, the option to hide the e-mail address and many others comes. You can read about all these news in our iCloud+ article.
