During the WWDC21 developer conference, Apple revealed new operating systems, including macOS 12 Monterey. It brings quite interesting changes in the form of a redesigned Safari browser, the Universal Control function, improvements for FaceTime, a new Focus mode and many others. Although Apple did not directly present some new functions during the presentation itself, it has now been found that Macs with the M1 chip (Apple Silicon) are at a significant advantage. Some functions will not be available on older Apple computers with Intel. So let's go through them together briefly.

FaceTime and Portrait mode – Only Macs with M1 will be able to use the so-called Portrait mode during FaceTime calls, which automatically blurs the background and leaves only you highlighted, just like on the iPhone, for example. However, it remains interesting that competing applications for video calls (such as Skype) do not have this problem.

Live Text in Photos – An interesting new feature is also the Live Text function, which Apple already presented when the iOS 15 system was unveiled. The native Photos application can automatically recognize the presence of text in photos, allowing you to work with it. Specifically, you'll be able to copy it, search it, and in the case of a phone number/email address, use the contact directly through the default app. However, this feature on macOS Monterey will only be available for M1 devices and will work not only within the Photos app, but also in Quick Preview, Safari and when taking a screenshot.

Maps – The ability to explore the entire planet Earth in the form of a 3D globe will arrive in native Maps. At the same time, it will be possible to view cities such as San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, London and others in detail.

macOS Monterey on Mac brings Shortcuts

Object Capture – The macOS Monterey system can handle remaking a series of 2D images into a realistic 3D object, which will be optimized for work in augmented reality (AR). A Mac with an M1 should be able to handle this at incredible speed.

On-device dictation – The novelty in the form of On-device dictation brings a rather interesting improvement, when the Apple server will not take care of text dictation, but everything will take place directly within the device. Thanks to this, the level of security will be increased, since the data will not go to the network, and at the same time, the whole process will be noticeably faster. Unfortunately, Czech is not supported. On the contrary, people who speak traditional Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese and Spanish will enjoy the feature.

Hope dies last

But for now, only the first developer beta version of the macOS 12 Monterey operating system is available. So if you use a Mac with an Intel processor, don't despair. There is still a chance that Apple will make at least some of them available over time.
