The period of the Christmas holidays is of course poorer for news. However, several interesting things happened in the world of applications at the end of the year. That's why the last App Week of 2015 is here.

News from the world of applications

Facebook gradually allows you to share and view Live Photos (December 21.12)

In the glow of last year, when the new iPhones 6s and 6s Plus were introduced and with them Live Photos (photos enriched with a short video), it was announced that these "live photos" will also be viewable on Facebook. At the time, Facebook promised that this would happen by the end of the year. Since then, the world's largest social network with full support for sharing and viewing Live Photos has overtaken Tumblr. However, in recent weeks, Facebook has also started to test and extend the support to the public.

Facebook supporting Live Photos means that users will be able to start a video complementing a still image in iOS apps, as Apple does not yet support them on the web. Others will only see that static image.

WhatsApp will reportedly learn video calling in the near future (December 23)

Everyone who visits Jablíčkář at least occasionally has already read about the communication application and service WhatsApp. Recently, a separate article was dedicated to her in April last year, when she expanded her abilities to include voice calls. Now there have been speculations and allegedly leaked screenshots that suggest that before long WhatsApp should also allow communication through video calls.

Unfortunately, we do not yet have more detailed information about the news, and there is no official statement from the developers either. But if the rumors are true and video calls will really come to WhatsApp, today almost a billion users of this service have something to look forward to.

2016 brings Final Fantasy IX to iOS (31/12)

The ninth installment of the legendary Final Fantasy series of RPG games was first released in 2000, then only for the PlayStation. Even though it is a very old game, it is still true that its world is elaborate and rich. The only downside was that the PlayStation was only able to work with a fairly low resolution. This will be one of the things that the port of Final Fantasy IX to iOS (as well as Android and Windows) is supposed to change.

The complex world with all the characters and the story consisting of the adventure journey of a community of eight will be preserved, and high definition, auto-save, leaderboards, etc. will be added.

For now, the only other known information is that Final Fantasy IX will only run on iOS 7 and later.

New applications

Microsoft has released a new selfie editing app

Microsoft has released a new app for the iPhone. Its name is Microsoft Selfie, and its purpose is exactly what you'd expect. It's basically the iOS version of the Lumia Selfie app that Microsoft developed for its Windows Phone-based Lumia.

Even this latest application from Microsoft's workshop is a demonstration of so-called "machine learning". Based on this technology, Microsoft Selfie will estimate the age, gender and skin color of the person photographed and then offer adequate enhancements for the given selfie.

Each of the thirteen special filters removes noise from the photo and takes care of other overall image improvements. Of course, the filters also add a special touch to the image in the given style.

Important update

Twitter for Mac has caught up with its iOS version

As promised, Twitter did. A major update to the desktop client of this popular social network has finally arrived on Mac. In addition, looking at the new version of the application, it is clear that the developers have done a real job.

Twitter version 4 on Mac brings a whole host of new features. Added support for OS X night mode, support for GIF animations and videos, and a new widget for the Notification Center. There is also the new option to block specific users, support for group messages has been added, and last but not least, support for the new tweet quoting format. And a slight cosmetic change is also worth mentioning – Twitter has a new round icon.

Although some important features such as Split View mode support are still missing, Twitter has definitely taken a step in the right direction with the news. Free update can be found in the Mac App Store.

VLC on iOS brings Split View, Touch ID and Spotlight support

VLC, probably the most popular tool for playing videos of all kinds, has received a major update on iOS. VLC now supports some of the news that came to iPhones and iPads with iOS 9. It is therefore possible to search for VLC content via the Spotlight system search engine, support for Split View mode has been added on the latest iPads, and Touch ID support for accessing your own video library by using a fingerprint.

It is not yet clear when VLC will also come to Apple TV. However, according to the promise of the developers, this should happen "very soon".
