WhatsApp has long been one of the most used applications for sending text and multimedia messages. Its latest update significantly changes the whole philosophy of this service – it enables voice calls.

Users of Android devices have been able to enjoy these for some time, and even now, not everyone with iOS will receive them immediately after installing the update. The call will be made available to everyone gradually over a period of several weeks.

After that, users will be able to initiate and receive voice calls without having to pay anything extra. The calls will take place via Wi-Fi, 3G or 4G and will be free for everyone (of course you need to have internet on your mobile phone), regardless of the location of both parties.

With this move, Facebook-owned WhatsApp, with its eight hundred million active users, becomes a strong competitor to other VoIP service providers such as Skype and Viber.

However, calling is not the only innovation in the new version of the application. Its icon was added to the sharing tab in iOS 8, which will allow you to send pictures, videos and links directly from other applications via WhatsApp. Videos can now be sent in bulk and cropped and rotated before sending. In the chat, an icon was added to quickly launch the camera, and in the contacts, the possibility to edit them directly in the application.
