The American server Fast Company published a ranking of the most innovative companies in the world yesterday, and Apple was in first place. One of the main reasons for this position was said to be the fact that thanks to Apple we can experience experiences from the future today. You can view the ranking including other detailed information here. Following its publication, an interview in which Tim Cook answered questions also appeared on the same website. Cook appears very often in interviews, so it's rather difficult to come up with questions that haven't been answered a hundred times before. In this case, a few were found, as you can see for yourself below.

In the interview, Cook mentioned an idea that had already been promoted by Steve Jobs at Apple. The main goal of the company is not to make huge sums of money, but to come up with the best possible products that impact people's lives as positively as possible. If this company succeeds, the money will come by itself...

For me, the value of Apple shares is the result of long-term work, not a goal as such. From my point of view, Apple is about products and the people those products touch. We evaluate a good year with regard to whether we managed to come up with such products. Were we able to make the best possible product that also positively enriched the lives of its users? If we answer positively to these two related questions, then we've had a good year.

Cook went into greater depth in the interview when discussing Apple Music. In this case, he talked about taking music as a very important part of human civilization and he would be very reluctant to see its essence pay off in the future. In the case of Apple Music, the company isn't doing it for itself, but rather for the sake of the individual artists.

Music is so important to the company that it was this aspect that completely influenced the development of the HomePod speaker. Thanks to a positive approach to music, HomePod was designed primarily as a top music speaker, and then as an intelligent assistant.

Imagine the complicated process of composing and recording music. An artist spends an enormous amount of time tweaking his work to the smallest detail, only to have the results of his efforts played on a small and ordinary speaker, which distorts everything and completely suppresses the original performance. All that musicianship and hours of work are gone. HomePod is here to let users enjoy the full essence of music. To experience exactly what the author intended when creating his songs. To hear everything they need to hear.

Another interesting question related to access to new technologies – how Apple decides when to be pioneers in a certain area (as in the case of Face ID) and when to follow what others have already introduced (for example, smart speakers).

I wouldn't use the term "follow" in this case. That would mean that we were waiting for others to come up with what they came up with so that we could follow. But it doesn't work like that. In reality (which in most cases is hidden from public view) individual projects have been in development for many, many years. This applies to the vast majority of our products, be it iPod, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch - usually it was not the first device in the given segment that appeared on the market. Mostly, though, it was the first product that was done right.

If we look at when the individual projects started, it is usually a longer time horizon than in the case of the competition. However, we are very careful not to rush anything. Everything has its time, and this is doubly true in product development. We do not want to use our customers as guinea pigs to test our new products for us. In this case, I think we have a certain amount of patience that is not common in the technology industry. We have enough patience to wait for the moment when the given product is really perfect before we send it to the people.

At the end of the interview, Cook also mentioned the near future, or about how Apple is preparing for it. You can read the whole interview here.

As for products, in the case of processors, we are planning development for three to four years ahead. We currently have several different projects in the works that stretch far beyond 2020.
