Apple at WWDC in June introduced a new version of your computer operating system - OS X 10.9 Mavericks. Since then, Apple developers have regularly released new test builds, and now the system is ready for the general public. It will be completely free to download.
Several new applications come with Mavericks, but significant changes have also taken place "under the hood". With OS X Mavericks, your Mac is even smarter. Power-saving technologies help get more out of your battery, and performance-enhancing technologies bring greater speed and responsiveness.
Namely, these are technologies such as combining timers, App Nap, saving mode in Safari, saving HD video playback in iTunes or compressed memory.
Also new in Mavericks is the iBooks application, which has long been familiar to iPhone and iPad users. The Maps application, also known from iOS, will also arrive on Mac computers with the new operating system. Classic applications such as Calendar, Safari and Finder were also updated, where we now see the possibility of using panels.
Users with multiple displays will welcome much better display management, which has been a rather annoying problem in previous systems. Notifications are also handled better in OS X 10.9, and Apple created iCloud Keychain to make entering passwords easier.
Craig Federighi, who introduced OS X Mavericks once again at today's keynote, announced that a new era of Apple computing systems is coming, in which the systems will be distributed completely free. Virtually anyone can download OS X 10.9, regardless of whether they have the latest or an older system such as Leopard or Snow Leopard installed on their Mac.
Supported computers for OS X Mavericks are 2007 iMac and MacBook Pro; MacBook Air, MacBook and Mac Pro from 2008 and Mac mini from 2009.
Finally, excellent management of OSX for free, great :-)
I'm wondering if anyone has successfully upgraded (ideally via TimeMachine) and what stopped working after that.
Thank you.
PS: I'm not just an internet surfer, I do SW development on a macbook starting with GCC commandline through Java and ending with Apache and various web frameworks...
nothing for me yet, neither iOS (Pages, etc.) nor OS X
It's already on the US appstore :) in Czech unfortunately :(
I've been using Maverick since it was released in June and everything works with IOS7 it wasn't easy at all, it didn't work enough. Until about the third edition, TB was angry, it froze the awakening belly, but now after GM, I haven't noticed a single bug yet.
Any idea when it will be released on the App store?
when will it be on the app store cz???
mac os x mavericks when will it be on aappp store?
where can i download it?
Well, where? On the app store.
Enter Mavericks on the appstore and click free upgrade. it just doesn't work at all
And where does it show you how fast it's downloading? I have OSX Maverick in the applications, but I don't see any indicator of how much has been downloaded, and not on the APP Store either
It goes very slowly. :D You can see it on the Launch pad.
Now Apple has really messed up. New software and free.? Amazing.! Microsoft with the completely unusable Windows can go and bury itself with its overpriced.!!
Do you mean that MS has been giving free SP for years? And now that he released 8.1 (which is actually SP. he's just marketing it the same way Apple did its (almost not) SP before?
Don't take the crap that marketing is pushing, just think and don't be part of the herd for a while...
This keynote was one big f#ckoff of Microsoft :D
I can already see it in the store, but I won't download it yet. I'd rather wait for version xx1 :)
Ok, it's out, but it will take 1 day and 21 hours to download :D
It's quite "freaking out" for me
here it is :-)
Does that mean I can legally download it and put it on a hackintosh without owning at least one original mac? Well done :)
Do you know when the new ilife and iWork will be released?
If I upgrade and have Win7 installed via BootCamp, will it be canceled or will it remain?
it will stay, don't worry. only for osx to install itself as it should :)
A rather unpleasant mistake happened somewhere. Macbook pro 13 late 2011 won't boot after installing…
Unable to open /var/db/bootcache.playlist
Watch out for a quick upgrade, even a quick reinstall didn't help :/ I'm curious if it will affect many of you too...
Mid 2011 is going well for me
If I upgrade to mavericks, Parallels desktop 8 will still work for me, or win 7 installed under it?
No one can guarantee it, so until someone tries it, I would wait for a statement or an update from Parallels with the upgrade.
If I didn't need Win, I'd upgrade and if it doesn't work, all the better reason to delete it all :-) This happened to me and then I didn't have the strength to get everything working again, so I deleted Win and since then the computers have been working for me, and not me for them.
Parallels reported about a month in advance that the 8 would not support Mavericks. We upgraded to version 9 and except for minor bugs (which appeared in this version and in Mountain Lion) it works fine
So Parallels Desktop 8 probably doesn't work. Parallels 8 cannot be started after upgrading to Mavericks, it reports some driver error. I haven't had it in my hands yet, so I guess it won't even work with the argument that I should buy PD 9. Maybe I'm wrong... but more likely not, it's worked that way with every update so far. New Mac OS X and to buy a newer version of Parallels Desktop.
Business is business and developer kids have to eat too...
On the manufacturer's page, PD 9 is also listed as "OS X Mavericks 10.9 (when available)", so PD 9 should work 99% on Mavericks, if someone did not make any major interventions in the system with cleaner or keeper toys.
Does it mean uninstall PD8, upgrade to Mavericks, then install PD 9 and fresh install WIN7..?? :-(
Well, not that complicated.
A) Correct procedure:
1. make a backup of the entire disk
2. format and install Mavericks on a clean disk
3. download all updates
4. install (and buy) PD 9
5. the virtual machine can be copied back to the Documents folder, it does not need to be reinstalled.
B) Such a less clean solution is:
1. Upgrade to Mavericks
2. install (and buy) PD 9
3. the virtual machine can be copied back to the Documents folder.
The second solution will most likely slow down your computer, but both solutions will work. It's all a question of the current state of the system.
I installed Mavericks a while ago and PD 8 works absolutely without problems.
And did it need some update or setting or did it start right away? Thanks in advance for the info, two people in my area are dealing with it...
Nothing happened at all as usual everything turned on win froze 2 times otherwise nothing new. Now I tried a few programs and no problems at all.
Thank you very much for the info, but I'll probably solve it anyway by buying PD 9.
It's a bit sad that in 4 years, if I'm not mistaken, I paid about 500 CZK from SnowLeopard for an OS upgrade, but for the Virtualization platform, with the upgrade to PD9, it would cost me about 3600 CZK (3x about 1200, - first Vmware Fusion , when they forced me to upgrade with a transition to Lion, then a transition to PD8 and then to PD 9).
Current status: PD 8 runs on Mavericks after downloading the update from the Parallels website. It is probably not necessary to buy PD 9 yet.
How can I get Mavericks on a 2009 Mac mini if there is no Mac App Store on Leopard? Thanks
Boot from another disk (USB flash with the installation of a newer Mac OS X). You can google it or rather pay someone to do it. But again, I would repeat my recommendation: back up and install on a clean disk. Upgrading from Leopard to Mavericks will most likely slow down the system brutally. It will run optimally with a clean installation. And 4 GB of RAM is the minimum, better buy 8 GB. 2GB of RAM is unusable, no point in upgrading.
thanks for the info
one more thing..what about the processor? There is a pitiful Intel Core Duo I think 2,2ghz..will it be enough? is it even worth it?
Any dual-core at 2 GHz is enough, as I wrote, the biggest problem is RAM and a slow disk, which it probably will be. So, specifically for this model, I would pay for an SSD drive, at least 4 GB of RAM (preferably 8) and then I would consider an upgrade. Otherwise, nothing.
90% of the slowness of a computer is a lack of RAM, when data is stored and read at the same time to a slow disk. So it makes sense to invest in RAM, but there are so many services running concurrently in the latest Mac OS X that an SSD is becoming a necessity.
I'm not sure if enough RAM is a saving grace. I have 12GB of Ram in my iMac, yet the work with Mavericks is much slower than in SL. It is certainly also a mechanical HD, but obviously in this case the large RAM does not help. It is true that the latest OS X (and ML) requires an SSD. Otherwise, it's terrible compared to older systems.
I wrote about this phenomenon, see the article "help, I have a slow mac" (the link is above in the discussion). On a clean install, just about anything will run well with 8GB of RAM. Going back to SL only makes sense with 2GB of RAM. I'm currently making a video on setting up Mavericks on an older computer if it's just after a clean disk install. How to roll back settings and apps.
I read that article, it's very good, I have it bookmarked. After all, it corresponds to my years of knowledge.
But with the clean install at 8GB, I'm not really sure it works. As I wrote, I have 12GB and a clean install of ML is dramatically slower than the original SL. At startup, logout, in Safari, in Mail... and perhaps in all Apple applications. In addition, some system keyboard shortcuts have disappeared - so this too is slower when you have to click the mouse. Just by the way.
In addition, for example, system animations (eg opening webloc) are somehow off; the animation will only take place after e.g. Safari is opened, which is still waiting for it... in short - there is something wrong with it. Even in ML, as well as in Mavericks, which I uninstalled, because it was perhaps even "worse" than ML... However, I have to point out that I don't use Mac for social networks and so on, not even for the notification center, etc. In this, perhaps, the last "forward" systems, but I can't judge that. I have all this turned off.
32-bit processors are not supported, the minimum is Core2 Duo.
sorry..I wrote wrong..it is Core2 Duo of course
Do not do it. You will be disappointed…
Hello,
I would like to ask if it is possible to install the new OS X on my Macbook Intel Core 2 Duo 2,4 GHz with 4 GB RAM? And how the Macbook will run under the new OS.
Thank you for answer.
will run slowly. It will start and log off about 3 times longer...
Where the hell are the lines in the notes, the puzzlement of what I should have done begins. thanks apple
Do you feel the slowdown with OS Mavericks installation? I have a mid2011 MB Air Core i5, 256gb ssd, 4gb ram and it vents like crazy all day long…
I have mavericks loaded on my macbook air 13, 8gb, 256, about 4 weeks old… and after loading mavericks it overheats … and the battery at 76% says only 1:56 battery life… has anyone had similar experience? Fan runs at 106 :(
downloaded, installed as an upgrade to 10.8.5 and after about 3 hours it was removed from the SSD and I'm still moving the Aperture library backup (which the 3.5 update upgraded and carried with 3.4)... it's still raw, the new wilderness with multiple displays when is the menu bar on all monitors is super crap until Aperture X arrives (when I switch Cinema display as secondary and display a picture on the entire screen, a translucent menu lights up...), Apple maps in Aperture are uglier (both 2D and 3D) than they are now Google, Aperture has a pretty decent bug when working on full screen and moving palettes - the image cannot be centered and the application needs to be restarted, IMAP Gmail accounts in the Mail application do not work, but this looks like a Google problem, I can't get Net Monitor and KeyRemap4MacBook, Dock cannot be switched to 2D & on non Retina MPB the 'email count' in the Dock is still unreadably small, and those small colored 'balls' instead of the entire file name marking seem like a step backwards.
On the other hand, it booted like a slingshot and graphic things were noticeably faster (Aperture, Capture NX 2). Not much has changed since 10.4 when I started with Mac, and if I switch to 10.9 it's only because of the new Aperture X and when 10.9.2 or 10.9.3 comes where most of the bugs will be caught.
Has anyone tried a combination of the new OS X and the old version of Final Cut please? Thanks.
If you mean FCP 7, then yes, including DVD Studio Pro 4. That's exactly how Final Cut Express 4 works. Tried it briefly, but without much work.
thanks a lot!
He who seeks will find. Books moved from the original iTunes library to iBooks were located here: Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/iBooks
But I want to have them as before because of the volume on the external disk.
The Czech grammar check does not work on the new OS X! On my old one, the downloaded Czech language worked everywhere without problems. iWork, iLife, mail, etc.
I installed it on my mac with snow leopard and asked for iphoto because the version I had (9.2.3) can't be used with this system. So thank you, but the update cost me 14,99 Euros (for a new iphoto) Can anyone advise how to get iphoto for free? Thank you in advance
iPhoto needs to be purchased, there is no free iPhoto upgrade as far as I know. I recommend paying, €15 isn't that insurmountable if that's all. In an emergency, a friend who paid for it can download it via a second Apple ID. A more complicated but temporarily functional solution. It won't update…
I recommend going back to SL (10.6.8). This system is the most tuned and working of all of OS X. Mavericks is a "hot needle", SIGNIFICANTLY slower than SL on older machines, missing a few native system hotkeys, etc etc... You can go back by doing a Time Machine backup, formatting the drive, installing the desired lower system and restoring with everything back from Time Machime. Wide mail exists on SL 10.6.8, safari is significantly nicer than in Mavericks... and most importantly, the SL machine WORKS!
Hello, when I swipe gesture (e.g. "back" in safari or app store) the whole window gets stuck and I can't do anything, does anyone have a similar problem?
Is it possible to go back to Mountain lion?
Only if someone made a backup of the entire drive as a DMG or someone has a hidden Mountain Lion installer. Clicking the "Z5" buttons certainly cannot undo it.
I have the installer on a flash drive :-) I just don't know how to run it so that it starts from the flash drive and doesn't download it from the internet
Shut down and start with Alt pressed. Then select the USB Flask as the boot disk. It should boot up and show the options
– run Disk Utility and format the system disk there
– start the installation and be careful to choose the correct target disk for the installation
It won't start the installation without formatting.
I will try. Thanks
Hello, yesterday I downloaded and installed Mavericks on last year's Mac mini, the installation went well, it took about 90 minutes, but today I encountered a problem in Mail, all my mails stored in folders were deleted, Mail is automatically backed up somewhere, is there a way to restore it , does anyone have a similar experience??? Thanks
No backup = no emails. It's time to switch from POP3 to IMAP. And start backing up :-)
When sharing Routes from Maps OS X to iPhone, none of my iOS7 devices show up. What and where do I need to set so that the Maps application can see my mobile device? Thank you
Hello, I have a 14-day-old Air 11" and after installing Maverick, I don't want to wake up from sleep mode... Also, sometimes WIFi drops... Does anyone have a similar experience?
This is not what Air should do. I would try reinstalling to a clean disk and if it happens again, I recommend visiting the dealer or someone experienced to advise what to do next.
Statistical question: is there any cleaner or keeper or antivirus installed?
Thank you for answer. I certainly haven't installed anything like that…
And in the Activity Monitor, does the CPU run any process at more than 50%? Instructions are below in the discussion, link to "Help, I have a slow Mac". If the CPU is loaded to a maximum of 10-20% and the fans are still spinning, then I would see it for a visit to the experts.
Max 8,3% Google Chrome runs in the Activity Monitor, I have never heard fans...
try resetting PRAM and SMC
Hello, I installed a new OS X 10.9 and when working with network drives (connected via smb) the color markings annoy me. Locally fine. They just don't show up for me. When I navigate to the folder, sometimes the colored dot appears, but sometimes it doesn't.
The dots really annoy me, I prefer the whole name marked.
Furthermore, representatives (again on the network) are angry with me. After creating them, I can't get through them :)
Finally, the function to search in the finder on the network works, I couldn't do that before. It's slow, but it works :)
Does anyone have similar problems and any advice? I didn't do a clean install. Thanks
I have a problem after updating to Mavericks. I don't see user libraries with mail and the mail application doesn't work because it can't find those libraries. But the saved emails remained on the imac. Finder is able to find them. But mail does not see them, because the system does not see those libraries and is not able to find them. So I am not able to start mail, and thus send and receive mails. In addition, all contacts from my address book were deleted.
