During yesterday's Apple Event, Apple pleasantly surprised us with a brand new computer called Mac Studio. Nothing was known about its arrival until the last moments, instead speculation revolved around the arrival of the high-end Mac mini, which will receive last year's M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. Instead, the Cupertino giant came up with the most powerful Mac ever. Thanks to the new M1 Ultra chip, even the Mac Pro, whose price can easily rise to more than 1,5 million crowns, can easily be pocketed.

As we mentioned above, Mac Studio got a chip in the wine M1Ultra, which is based on the UltraFusion architecture. This confirmed earlier speculations that, purely theoretically, two to four M1 Max chips could be connected. And this is the reality now. The M1 Ultra actually uses two separate M1 Max chips, thanks to which Apple was able to double practically all the specifications - therefore it offers a 20-core CPU (16 powerful and 4 economical cores), a 64-core GPU, a 32-core Neural Engine and up to 128 GB of unified memory. The aforementioned architecture also ensures an essential thing. In front of the software, the chip looks like a single piece of hardware, so its full potential can be used.

Mac Studio beats the significantly more expensive Mac Pro

Already at the very unveiling of Mac Studio, Apple presented the extreme performance of the M1 Ultra chip. It is even 60% faster in the CPU area than the Mac Pro with 28-core Intel Xeon, which, by the way, is the best processor that can be installed on this giant. The same is true in terms of graphics performance, where the M1 Ultra beats the Radeon Pro W6900X graphics card by a whopping 80%. In this respect, Mac Studio certainly does not lack, and it is more than clear that it can handle even the most demanding tasks with a wave of the hand. After all, as mentioned directly by Apple, the computer can handle video or photo editing, development, work in 3D and a number of other operations. Specifically, this model can handle, for example, up to 18 ProRes 8K 422 video streams at once.

If we were to put the new Mac Studio and Mac Pro from 2019 next to each other, no one would think that the new product could significantly surpass the capabilities of the best Mac until recently. Especially considering the sizes. The height of the Mac Studio is only 9,5 cm, and the width is 19,7 cm, while the Mac Pro is a full-sized desktop with a height of 52,9 cm and a length of 45 cm and a width of 21,8 cm.

Mac Studio is a cheap computer

Of course, when considering the capabilities of Mac Studio, it is clear that this new addition to the family of Apple computers will not be the cheapest. In its highest configuration, with a basic 1TB storage, it costs 170 (with 990TB storage, 8 CZK). At first glance, this is a relatively high amount. However, if we were to configure the Mac Pro in roughly the same way, i.e. choose the option with a 236-core Intel Xeon W processor, 990GB of operating memory and a Radeon Pro W28X graphics card and 96TB of storage, this computer would cost us more than half a million crowns, or CZK 6900. The Mac Studio model will not only offer higher performance than this configuration, but it is also 1 thousand crowns cheaper.

Of course, this does not mean that this piece will suddenly surpass the MacBook Air in sales. But if someone needs a full-fledged computer with maximum performance, while not having to deal with some of the shortcomings of Apple silicon, it is clear that they probably won't reach for the Mac Pro. So Apple managed to create a professional computer at a relatively low price.
