Apple TV is a long-standing part of the Apple portfolio. It is a multimedia box that can turn any TV into a smart one. It builds on high performance, its own tvOS operating system and support for hundreds of great applications. Its use is also extremely simple. Just plug it into the network, connect it to the TV via HDMI, and you're practically done. Thanks to the support of 4K resolution, HDR (Dolby Vision, HDR10+) and Dolby Atmos, it also ensures that you can enjoy your favorite content in the best quality.
For a long time, however, Apple fans have been discussing whether Apple TV 4K still makes sense at all. Although years ago it was the ultimate device that can significantly improve the capabilities of your TV, the development of smart TVs in general cannot be ignored. Today, smart TVs can already replace the functions and performance of Apple TV in many ways, and in addition, a number of Apple applications are available on them. So is it true that with the growing possibilities of smart TVs, the definitive end of the Apple TV is really approaching? Not quite. Let's focus on this in a little more detail.
The future of Apple TV
As we mentioned above, some options that were previously exclusive to Apple TV can now be found on smart TVs as well. A prime example is the AirPlay 2 protocol for wireless communication, which is used for real-time audio sharing or screen mirroring, for example. There are several such mentions. Over time, however, AirPlay is starting to reach the aforementioned TVs, as well as some applications such as TV. Fears that Apple TV as such will be replaced by smart TVs with webOS are therefore definitely justified. Even so, Apple probably has nothing to worry about.
Apple TV is still a relatively unique and useful device that you can definitely use in your living room. In this regard, the device mainly benefits from its high performance and simple user environment, or from the tvOS operating system. So it is not a problem to play interesting games directly on the TV with peace of mind, or immerse yourself in playing titles from the Apple Arcade service. In terms of comfort, Apple TV clearly wins.
Role in the smart home
We must not forget one essential feature. In recent years, the concept of the smart home has been growing. Individual products are becoming more accessible and a significant move forward also promises a new communication standard Matter, the aim of which is to unify the smart home and make it even simpler for all users. And it is in this area that Apple TV plays an extremely important role. It can play the role of a home center that has a complete smart home under your thumb and allows you to control it even when you are half a planet away.
Not only can Apple TV make watching multimedia content more enjoyable, but it also ensures the carefree functioning of the household. That is why the latest model received support for the Thread protocol, which is closely related to the aforementioned Matter standard. In the role of home center (with Thread support), Apple TV can only replace HomePod mini and HomePod 2nd generation.
The end of ATV will be when it will be possible to connect Homepods via Airplay in the ATV TV application.
We have Apple TV in the configuration Apple TV -> 7.1 amplifier -> TV only as a large monitor.
I also see other advantages in Apple TV - we usually play music from Apple TV to the amplifier in the living room, which saves a lot of electricity.
When I solved it years ago, not all TVs could send Dolby Atmos to the amplifier. I don't know how it is today.
Apple TV also has probably the best remote control I've ever had - the TV or amplifier control has too many buttons :-)
Of the small things, I need to be able to pause whatever is playing on the Apple TV or comfortably type on the iPad keyboard on the Apple Watch...
Another important thing that smart TVs cannot do, unlike Apple TV, is the connection with exercise bikes and applications Zwift, Rouvy, FulGaz... For example, this was the main reason for the purchase for me. Easy viewing of synced photos and videos is also a plus
