Introducing a device in 2022 that is based on the design of the model introduced in 2017 is a rather bold move. Whether Apple succeeds in the case of the 3rd generation iPhone SE will of course only become clear with the interest of customers. It is true, however, that at the same price level, the competition offers much more, only with lower performance.

Although Apple said that the new iPhone SE is a well-known and much-loved design, the question is whether it can still impress in the age of frameless displays. Slight improvements took place mainly inside, and on the outside it is still the same phone, which many will have trouble distinguishing.

Although we usually list prices at the end of comparison articles, here it's a good idea to reverse the order to make it clear why we're comparing the iPhone SE 3rd generation with Samsung's model, the Galaxy A52s 5G smartphone. Apple's new product costs CZK 64 in its 12GB memory version, CZK 490 in 128GB, and CZK 13 in the 990GB configuration. You can buy the Samsung Galaxy A256s 16G in a 990GB variant with support for microSD cards up to 52 TB for CZK 5. At least that's what the official Online Stories of both companies say. It is therefore a device of the same price category.

Display

The biggest limitation of the iPhone SE is simply its archaic design, due to which its display also suffers. This is especially so in terms of size, when it is still 4,7" diagonal. Apple refers to it as a Retina HD display, which is of course LCD technology. The resolution is then 1334 x 750 pixels at 326 pixels per inch and its maximum brightness (typical) is 625 nits. In contrast, the Galaxy A52s 5G has a 6,5" inch display, but it is already a FHD+ Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels at 405 ppi, which reaches a maximum brightness of 800 nits.

Performance

There's not much to discuss here, and it's obvious that the iPhone SE 3 is the pinnacle of smartphone performance. It received the A15 Bionic chip, which the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro also have, and it simply has no competition. The question is whether this device can use such performance at all. Due to the small display, it is not suitable for playing games, the same is true for watching videos, and due to the weak camera, it will not be used too much either. Here, Apple has only prepared the ground for a long-term sale of a device that will still have performance to give away in three years.

The Galaxy A52s 5G has an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G processor, which cannot quite match the performance of the iPhone. The RAM memory is 6 GB. Apple does not provide it for its iPhones, but the new SE should have 4 GB of RAM.

Cameras

The A15 Bionic gives the iPhone's 12MP sf/1,8 camera some extra features, such as photo styles, Deep Fusion or Smart HDR 4, but otherwise it's still the same camera, which at least has OIS. The competition in the form of Samsung already has a quad camera. The primary is 64MPx wide-angle sf/1,8 and OIS, followed by 12MPx ultra-wide-angle sf/2,2 and 123-degree angle of view, 5MPx macro camera sf/2,4 and 5MPx depth camera sf/2,4. Both models have LED lighting. The front camera of the iPhone is 7MPx sf/2,2, the Galaxy is equipped with a 32MPx camera sf/2,2, which is present in the display in the cutout.

Other

Both models are classified as 5G smartphones, both have resistance that meets the IP67 specification. The Galaxy has a 4500mAh battery, if the iPhone SE is the same as the previous generation, it has a capacity of 1821mAh. However, Apple is suffocating how the endurance has increased thanks to the new chip and provides 20W charging, Samsung can do 25W. Of course, the iPhone has a Lightning connector, the competition more or less offers only USB-C, which is also the case with the Galaxy A52s 5G. The iPhone includes a Touch ID home button, while the Galaxy has an in-display fingerprint sensor. However, Samsung found a place for a 3,5 mm jack connector in its smartphone

Apple has managed to pack all of these into a compact body with a height of 138,4 mm, a width of 67,3 mm and a thickness of 7,3 mm. The iPhone SE 3rd generation weighs 144g. The Samsung is significantly larger and heavier. Its dimensions are 159,9 x 75,1 x 8,4 and its weight is 189 g. So, if you look at all the parameters, the competition loses performance, but the lower one is optimally divided into the functions that the device offers. Although the Apple iPhone SE 3 has "tuned" its performance, its potential remains untapped.
