On the occasion of the opening keynote for the WWDC 2020 developer conference, the Californian giant showed us the upcoming watchOS 7 operating system. Immediately after the presentation, the first developer beta versions were released, which we have been testing in the editorial office from the very beginning. Probably the most anticipated new feature of the entire system is the new function for sleep analysis. Apple watches offer a wide range of various functions, which no one can deny. But so far they have their own Achilles heel. This is, of course, the absence of a native solution for sleep analysis, which apple users have to replace with one of the apps from the App Store, at least for now.
The right schedule is the key to success
A new native application called Sleep has been added to the watchOS 7 operating system. Apple is fully aware of the importance of sleep and decided to implement this function at the last minute. For this reason, it is not simply a measure of sleep. The Californian giant has a slightly different goal. It wants to slightly reeducate its users and support them in following regular and healthy sleep. In this case, regularity is extremely important. One should not spend the night unnecessarily, but should go to sleep regularly and get up again regularly. For this reason, you can see so-called schedules in the application settings. Here you can set your convenience store and wake up time for different days according to your needs. Personally, I decided to create two schedules - the first for classic weekdays and the second for the weekend. You can learn a so-called sleep routine using this exact step.
Apple owes its popularity in part to its sophisticated ecosystem. Whatever happens on the Apple Watch, we can immediately see it on the iPhone and possibly also on the Mac. The sleep data itself can therefore be found in the native Zdraví application on iOS, where you can also adjust your schedules, customize settings, or turn off sleep monitoring completely. In any case, we must clearly highlight the connection with the aforementioned Health application. In it, we will find absolutely everything that might interest us about our condition. When we also take into account the new labeling of symptoms, we have to admit that this is a great step forward.
Can it handle battery monitoring?
But why didn't Apple decide to monitor sleep through the Apple Watch earlier? Many apple growers answer this question quite unambiguously. Apple watches don't exactly have twice the battery life and often don't even last two days on a single charge. Fortunately, the Californian giant behaved as best it could in this direction. If your watch drops below 14 percent even before the grocery store, i.e. during the quiet time of the night, you will receive an automatic notification that you should charge it. Here we come across another great gadget that appeared in iOS 100 for a change. Your iPhone once again informs you through a notification that the watch has been charged to XNUMX percent. For this reason, you don't have to worry about sleep monitoring limiting you in any way.
But charging itself was a problem for me from the beginning. Until now, I was used to charging the watch overnight, when I put it on the stand before going to bed and put it on in the morning. In this case, I had to change my habits a little and learn to charge the watch in the evening, or in the morning. Fortunately, it wasn't a big problem and I got used to it completely within two or three days. During the day, when I'm also doing work or doing other activities and I don't really need the watch, nothing prevents me from charging it.
Lock mode
In addition, I have never once had the watch wake me up in any way while I was sleeping. As soon as it's time to go shopping, the Apple Watch automatically switches to sleep mode, when it activates Do Not Disturb, reduces the brightness many times and locks itself in a certain way. In this way, it cannot happen that, for example, the watch starts to shine in my face at night, because to unlock it, the digital crown must be turned - practically exactly the same as when unlocking it, for example, after swimming.
How the excitation itself works
In the past, I have reviewed several fitness bands that had no problem with sleep monitoring and also offered alarm clock options. In any case, these products cannot be compared absolutely with the Apple Watch. Waking up with an apple watch is incredibly pleasant, because the music slowly starts playing and the watch seems to tap your wrist lightly. In this respect, Apple cannot be faulted - everything simply works as it should. After waking up, you will also receive a wonderful message on your iPhone. The Apple phone will automatically welcome you, show you the weather forecast and information about the battery status.
Is the Apple Watch worth it for sleep monitoring?
I was initially quite skeptical about this feature, mainly due to the battery and impracticality. I was also afraid that I would somehow swing my hand while sleeping and thus damage my Apple Watch. Fortunately, a week of use dispelled those concerns. Personally, I have to admit that Apple has gone in the right direction and I have to unequivocally praise the sleep monitoring. What I liked the most was the whole interconnectedness through the apple ecosystem, when we have all the data available through the Health application. Perhaps the only thing missing is for us to have Health available on Mac as well.
Hello on iPad?,,
Thanks for the heads up, Health is of course not on the iPad yet. Hopefully Apple will fix it soon :) have a nice evening.
Good evening, the article basically does not describe how it actually works at all. I have an apple watch 5 and I have been trying it for a week or so, unfortunately everything is totally confusing to control and terrible. I can't even set steps in the watch face, or at least I couldn't find it .Half of the information in the watch, other information in the phone and everything is totally confused. For example, the Galaxy Watch from Samsung is completely different. without any complicated settings. It still doesn't annoy you with some unnecessary notifications and crap like awards. And I'm not talking about technology, like for example the watch only connects to wifi when it loses connectivity with the phone via BT. The Apple watch is always connected. Simply put, the person who uses the apple watch should try the competition sometime, and suddenly he would find out that, for example, a Samsung is ten years ahead and so on. But that's in vain, because the app makers also cursed widgets, and suddenly when they have them, they celebrate how good it is. That was from gestures anyway .which apple completely took over from Blackberry, and also the applists said before that it was useless.
I switched from the Galaxy Watch Active to the Apple Watch and you're right that Samsung is completely different, but unfortunately it's about ten years behind and compared to the Apple Watch it's just a polished semi-functional misery. And their goal of taking 200.000 steps every month is laughable, AW motivates, Samšunt doesn't, and they measure poorly, not just steps, but everything.
Well, Samsung measures exactly the same as Apple, tested, and unfortunately it's clear that everything is totally confused and unclear. And after half an hour of practice, my Apple Watch recognized that something was going on, and Samsung recognizes it right away. However, of course, everyone uses what they suits.
So you didn't "get" the fact that you just need to press your finger on the watch face and click on Edit and adjust as needed? I need to use the Siri watch face tuned for me and dynamically see the things I need and want throughout the day. What is wrong with the fact that they are also connected to wifi? At least it won't pick up on weak bluetooth when the iPhone is on the other side of the apartment, which I don't take as a negative, but on the contrary...
I had a Samsung watch last year, a complete tragedy, unreliable, something kept falling out of it, sometimes the call notification came and sometimes not, sometimes it showed the name of the contact, sometimes just the number. Tragedy. Gold Apple Watch, everything is working as it should.
I would rather be interested in where the "sleep analysis" that the author writes about in the title has gone? No stages of sleep, no recording of sounds, no analysis of heart rate during sleep... If I'm not mistaken, for over a year now, the iPhone allows you to set the required sleep time and notify you when you should go to sleep. No hit parade takes place…
Although I have a MacBook Pro, an iPad, only Suunto or Garmin sports watches. :-)
This article is about nothing. The sleep app for the Apple Watch has been around for years and works well - that is to say, you should write about how Apple does it and whether it's better or worse and how it fares compared to others. Lyrical passages about putting my watch on the charger and gazing reverently at it - that's zero informational benefit.
I also expected the author to write us information on how accurate the watch is and what I can find out from the saved data. Zero benefit for me. Damage.
