As a resident of Prague without my own car, I have to rely on public transport in the vast majority of cases, and having timetables at hand on my phone is a necessity for me. That's why I've been using IDOS (formerly Connections) since its debut in the App Store. The application has changed considerably since its first version, functions have gradually been added, and IDOS has become a full-fledged client for the web interface with the vast majority of the functions it offers.
However, the developer Petr Jankuj wanted to simplify the application for a long time so that, rather than a full-fledged version of IDOS, it would serve as the fastest possible way to find relevant information about the nearest connection, which is ultimately what we need most often on the iPhone. The new version of iOS 7 was a great opportunity for this, and IDOS 4 goes hand in hand with the new design language of Apple's operating system.
We will notice the simplification already on the initial screen. The previous version consisted of several separate tabs, now we have only one screen around which everything revolves. Functions from the tabs are available directly from the main page - in the upper part you can switch between searching for connections, departures from a stop or the timetable of a specific line. Bookmarks appear by swiping to the right, and all the settings, which are also very truncated, have been hidden in the system settings.
A visible novelty is the map at the bottom, which displays the nearest stops around your location. Each pin represents a stop, as IDOS also knows the exact GPS coordinates of stops in many Czech cities. Click on a stop to select it in the field From where. Thanks to this, you will no longer need to find out the name of the nearest stop and at the same time you can see other nearby stops, which in turn will make it easier to decide in which direction to go to the stop and any related searches on maps.
In addition, by holding your finger on the map, it can be enlarged to full screen and navigated similarly to the dedicated Maps application. Pins with stops will also be displayed here, however, from this screen, a stop can be marked not only as a start station, but also as a destination station, if you are guiding someone else to an event location.
Stops From where, Where and possibly Over (must be turned on in the settings), however, it is of course possible to search classically. The application whispers stops after the first letters are written. Previously present favorite stations have disappeared, instead the application offers the most frequently used stops after opening the search window. In fact, it selects your favorite stations for you. So you don't have to think about which stations you want to save as favorites, IDOS will display them in dynamic order. Of course, it is also possible to select the current position and let the application select a station based on your location. A menu is then available for a more detailed search Advanced, where you can choose, for example, connections without transfers or means of transport.
You select timetables from the menu that appears after clicking on the top bar with the name of the timetable. IDOS can filter out the most recently used timetables for quick switching, for a complete overview you need to switch the list to All. The option to buy an SMS ticket according to the selected order has also been hidden in this offer.
The list of found connections is significantly clearer than ever before. It will offer a complete overview of transfers for each connection, without the need to open the details of the connection. It will show not only the individual lines, but also the travel time and the waiting time between transfers. The map in the upper part will then display the starting and destination stations. From this screen it is also possible to add a connection to bookmarks or send the entire statement (ie not just individual connections) by e-mail.
Since the listing already offers the most important information, the connection detail has turned into a kind of itinerary, where instead of a boring overview of individual transfers, it lists instructions, similar to a navigation application. These may sound, for example: "Get off, walk approximately 100 m, wait 2 minutes for Tram 22 and drive 6 minutes to the Národní třída stop." It also adds an overview of all the stations you will pass through without having to click on anything. However, by tapping on any part, you will open an overview of all stations for that connection.
show on the map, which is especially useful for transfers, where individual stations can be hundreds of meters apart, and you don't have to get lost and worry that the connecting train will leave before you find the stop. In the same way, the connection can be saved in the calendar including a notification or sent via SMS.
Unfortunately, some information is missing here for trains and buses, for example platform numbers, but the question is whether they are even available through the API. Another temporary shortcoming is the absence of search history, which was available in the previous version, but should appear in a future update.
As already mentioned at the beginning, IDOS also allows you to search for the departures of all lines from a specific stop, which is a great substitute for searching in the physical timetables at the stop. Since the current position can be entered into the search instead of entering the name of the stop, you will find relevant information faster than if you had to take a few steps on the platform. Finally, there is also the option of searching for the route of the lines.
IDOS 4 is a big step forward, mainly in terms of ease of use and intuitive user interface. Although the application looks significantly simplified, in reality it lost only a few functions that nobody used very much. The new version is not a free update, but a new standalone app, which we see quite often with iOS 7 software. Anyway, the fourth version of IDOS is really a completely new application rewritten from the ground up with a completely new user interface, not just a slight graphical change.
If you travel by public transport, train or bus often, the new IDOS is practically a must. You can find several alternatives in the App Store, but Petr Jankuja's application is unsurpassed in terms of functions and appearance. It is currently only available for iPhone, however, an iPad version should be added in time as part of an update.

Apart from the so far missing redesign on iOS 7, is there any reason to switch from the free jizdnirady.cz client after years? (When you write that it is unsurpassed) https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/jizdni-rady-idnes.cz/id473503749?mt=8
For example, IDOS is without ads, the mentioned function with a map, significantly better UI (not only design), a much better list of found connections... it's all in the review, the comparison is then up to you.
I would also like to mention the missing possibility of choosing a transfer station and "whispering" station names in the "timetables".
I would be a little concerned about the up-to-dateness of connections in IDOS4 (e.g. in the event of a lockout, etc.). I don't know what database the application draws from...
I would also be very interested in a comparison of the speed of these two applications!
IDOS accesses the same online database as the web version, so exclusions are immediately reflected there. In terms of speed, the older version of IDOS was faster than Timetables, and the new IDOS is significantly faster than the older IDOS, especially when searching for results. It is especially noticeable on EDGE, but I also noticed an acceleration on 3G.
Thanks!
For the sake of less than three Euros, I will not complain about the fact that I bought the application about a month ago and now I would have to do it again, if the horrors that were in the original application were removed: incredibly unpleasant entry of stops, bad identification of stops and, above all, finding completely different connections. than with IDOS on the web!
How annoying is entering stops? Thanks to whispering, I write a few letters and that's it, plus it remembers previously searched stops. As for the second issue, please report it to the developers, it might be some kind of bug.
I struggled quite a bit with finding the connection when I was in Kačerov and wanted to take the bus to Vrbova station. I'm in Prague, but when I enter Vrbova, there is a mistake for Vrbová, when I enter Prague, Vrbova, there are strangely two commas between Prague and the station. After tapping three times and having to go back a step, it would hit me that there was nothing left of my entry and I could start over.
As for the connections, specifically, public transport in Ústí n/L can find a bus from somewhere to somewhere on the website at five in the morning, but it completely misses one connection on my iPhone. And it's an adventure, so what to believe, whether it will work or not.
I say, I recommend writing to the developer and solving the shortcomings with him.
I don't know why he didn't do it as an upgrade to Idos
yeah, great. it's just a shame that you always have to buy each new version :( what should I do with the previous two versions? Mr. Jankuj is correcting the shortcomings, but he's going to have to pay a lot for it. :( I would have expected the update to be free.
exactly, my word
The application is useless for the people of Prague. I recommend a free app - MHDapp, which is free and also adapted to iOS7. It has the same options and updates regularly.. (y)
As some have already said. I don't really understand why this is not an update of the previous version. Which in addition is not fully functional in iOs 7 (it crashes when switching from the map application and other shortcomings) I bought the previous version and was disappointed only by the incorrect functionality and I did not return it in the appstore with the feeling that an update would surely solve it.. But I probably should have. Even if it's €3, that's money too
This - I think - was dealt with here recently and I wouldn't see a problem with it, there is still the option of simply not buying. When no one buys, it's a clear signal to the developer that it's not going to work that way. I don't know the pre-previous versions, but compared to the last one it's a big difference (in appearance, otherwise I haven't tried) and making such changes in the design is definitely not an afternoon's work. Not even for two.
The development of a completely new application and charging for it is OK, but the fact that the original application does not go through any major updates and corrections of deficiencies and includes everything wrong even in the paid version is not OK! it seems a bit unfair to me. then I'll stay with the previous version. I'm not talking about the 70 kc, but about the fact that we pay at least 40-70 kc for updates and corrected deficiencies that are free elsewhere as part of the update.
As a user, I would certainly like to have everything for free, but on the other hand, I am a realist and I don't know where the idea that there is an automatic right to a free update came from. Resp. for updates and bug fixes, why not (if I forget that you buy the program "as is"), but for upgrades? I'm not advocating directly for IDOS, because I only used the "last" version there and no other, so I can't compare what the benefit of the newer versions was.
However, one interesting trend can be seen: regardless of the low price of the applications, users want free updates forever and continue to confirm this misguided idea until there is a consensus among them that it simply SHOULD be so. So the price of 70 kroner is obviously not related to that, even one kroner would be frowned upon and we would flaunt the "principle". Hell, just don't buy it, right? It's that simple.
but a lot of people complained that it was bugged, that it crashed, etc. and how many updates were there? maybe two? it makes it a rule. for every minimal improvement or bug fix, it was announced that the fix would come with a new version update. and now the update arrived, but for 70 CZK. so Mr. Jankuj announces that he rents them for 3 euros a year, and every year he has to pay them again in order to get an improved and corrected previous version, and that's it. and some say that it crashes even with the new version. so there is a fear among many people that they will encounter some problem that will be solved again in a year in a new 70kc version. that's what it's all about. I understand that development costs something and you can't afford to make changes for free like most international applications do, but let's be fair.
If you look down in the discussion, I complained about the functionality myself, so we're definitely on the same page. I also wrote that I can't completely defend IDOS because I don't know its error history.
But comparing international applications, where there is a much larger number of potential customers (or it doesn't matter where the application was created, but its purpose - which IDOS probably won't break through in the USA), is not entirely fair.
however, I recognize that. I just don't think the argument that I should keep the old version is very valid. in my opinion, this is not a new application, but just a different version of the same one, and I don't believe that IDOS in the pocket will now be repaired, updated, etc. And in case of any problem or out-of-date, the file will be avoided and users will be told to buy a new one. it is necessary to calculate with the amount of 70 kc per year for this application.
I hope that the application will serve you all well and will make traveling easier for you. I apologize for any problems and please feel free to contact me. The application has undergone intensive testing by testers and I would also like to thank them in this way. You were great!
No problems so far, it just needs a new iPhone, the application (as well as the whole iOS) is already too slow for me.
Personally, I can recommend the CG Transit application, which seems to me to be much faster (e.g. when choosing stops) and overall more clear and functional than IDOS (old version, I will not buy a new one).
Otherwise, I find the licensing policy of the IDOS developer quite strange. This is the second time he cut off the old version and paid for the new one.
CG Transit is offline. He uses timetables downloaded to his mobile, which makes him whisper faster.
oh, so absolutely the best, no fees for having to be online when searching ;)
It does not need a connection, even the application as such is free, but an annual license is paid for the timetable. Overall, it will be more expensive, but I think it's worth it for the speed.
I also use this application and it seems normal to pay for services of reasonable quality. And I don't really care if I pay 50 or 100, for God's sake, what kind of money is that? Are any of you dealing with this? After all, those prices are ridiculous... when you consider how much you pay for, for example, mobile navigation and how much external navigation costs, it really seems ridiculous to me to talk about paying a kilo for a quality application...
Hello,
Has anyone managed to put the route in the calendar? A nonsensical until date appears in the calendar and the event cannot be saved. I don't want to go back to today since 2000. is it just me or the app?
Don't know how to add a field for choosing a transfer station?
The app has settings among other iOS settings (i.e. in the Settings app)
I would like to support Mr. Jankuj, but this is the second time that he has paid for the same application, the first was Connections, the second was IDOS in his pocket, and now, like every year, he has everything paid for? I won't say once, twice, I understand it, but three times the same application ???
The application uses the official API of the IDOS service and thus differs from others. Old versions of applications are still functional, and new versions were never just a copy of the old one, but always significant major updates. If the basic functions of other applications are enough, let them use them. There are plenty of alternatives.
well, I ask, will you support the old version this way or will you arrange it as before?
It is understandable that there will be no support for the old version, then the new version would lack all meaning ;)
so it will be functional until the end of the year, then IDOS will change the driving advice and I can delete it and buy a new one, really great :-D
I'd rather download driving advice iDnes.cz, I have it for free and it offers me the same as this, I still expect from an application, only free things, I don't have to buy a paid application because of that, Mr. Jankuj disappointed me as I understand that he needs to earn money, but every year a new application that I have to He's going to pay me again, it's not fair, I bought IM+Pro7 after five years, I understand, but since then Mr. Jankuj has already put three applications Connections, IDOS in his pocket, and now these are three unnecessary applications, nothing against you Mr. Jankuj, but he will come fair to you?? see three times on the same application????
Sir, this is about support, is the update version old, but probably not, I'm not right? it will be functional but as long as it is, sir, I'll be happy to support you, but I don't think it's fair that you install the old version and immediately have the new one, and if you're not going to support the old version anymore, why don't you download the old version from the app store
sorry to rub
Appka Jizdniradyidnes.cz for free and shit on some idos whose zebra poops every now and then :(
Ribs? After all, Petr jankuj has done a great job that is worth paying for. I will easily pay extra for an application I use every day.
So I don't know how it was with the previous ones, but this is essentially a new application. After all, then half of the developers around the world who have released an update for iOS7 applications are begging.
well, the point is that when I buy something (anything and however expensive) I demand that it works for me/that's fair, right? But when I buy an app and after some time I'm FORCED to buy a new one (because the old work/if it worked, it doesn't come out new - you don't have to), that's how it is for me. If it was written on the app, the price of xy eche for a year of use, I won't even say ashes and will look for something else where I really get what I want for all the money ;) nice day You also wouldn't like it if you bought a PS4 now and next year they would start making games that the PS4 won't support and you would be forced to buy a PS5, which will be offered to you ;) if you had that information, you would definitely buy an XBOX, which would have support for several years ;)
Well, and the old one no longer works?
every moment? Every two years. And the application from iDnes is unusable.
To all those complaining that it's not just a free update, just remember - did you expect that when you bought GTA IV, you'd get GTA V for free? Probably not, and the principle is the same here.
if a repair and a small update of the original IDOS were sent at the same time, I wouldn't even say ashes.
It's quite similar to those games. Also, the developers no longer deal with them when releasing a new part. And what small update would you like? And what repair?
The game GTA IV is a completely different game than GTA V (that's another example :D) I'm better if I buy FIFU 14, then I have a whole year of support for it in the form of new updates ;) then it's up to me whether I buy 15. Go advice doesn't change that much ;)
But there was also support for IDOS (a year? I don't know exactly now, but it certainly wasn't just a few months). Although the timetables do not change that much, the application has changed really drastically.
that's true, but when the author makes a new game, you always have to update the old one, even if it's small, but at least you have to do it with Angry Birds, which has several episodes even when a new one comes out, but the old ones are still supported, I wouldn't dare to compare the games here Mr. Jankuj's application and it is maximum audacity from him that it is clear that the old IDOS in his pocket will never get support, but Mr. Jankuj still offers it for money in the appstore, he should at least have a little character and a version for which there will never be support, he should download it from the appstore , many people need to download it, but the application will never get support anymore, and it's enough from IDOS to change every council, and finally, I have nothing against Mr. Jankuj, I wish him much success, but I find such behavior quite sarcastic on his part
The app is great. Finally, the timetables are simple, pleasant and, above all, beautiful.
And to all of you whining about having to pay again: The previous app has been in storage since 2011. August 2011! That means she lasted over 2 years. And during all that time, the author didn't have any extra money from you, so now he demands it as part of the remake and you scold him? Do you work for free, that you expect it from others?
