Last week, at Apple's special Keynote, we learned that it will release new operating systems to the general public this week. Immediately after the end of the event, the final developer betas of iOS 15.4, iPadOS 15.4, tvOS 15.4, watchOS 8.5 and macOS 12.3 were released. What news to expect in them?

The technology giant also announced at its event that specifically iOS 15.4 will arrive to users next week, i.e. this week. This is because on Friday he launched pre-sales of the 3rd generation iPhone SE and the new green variants of the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro, which will be distributed to customers with this operating system.

iOS 15.4

Face ID with covered airways

While iOS 14.5 allows you to unlock the iPhone with the help of the Apple Watch in case Face ID does not recognize the user of the device, in the case of the upcoming version of the system, Apple takes this option even further. Of course, not every iPhone owner also owns the company's smartwatch, so after two years since the COVID-19 pandemic has been with us, it finally comes with a function that will allow us to unlock our iPhones even with a respirator or mask on.

Emoji

As part of the release of the Emoji 14.0 set by the Unicode Consortium, several dozen new emoji will come along with the new system. These include the melting or saluting face, biting the lip, beans, X-ray, lifebuoy, dead battery or even the rather controversial pregnant man.

A new voice for Siri

The fourth beta version of iOS 15.4 also brings a new voice, Siri Voice 5. But it is not explicitly male or female, and according to the company, it was recorded by a member of the LBGTQ+ community. It's another step in Apple's diversity efforts, which began in iOS 14.5 last April, when the default female voice was removed and two recorded by black actors were added.

Vaccination records in the EU

The Health app will now support the EU Digital COVID Certificate format, so you can add your vaccination record to the Wallet app as well (in supported regions).

Tap to Pay on iPhone

As previously announced, Apple added Tap to Pay in iOS 15.4. iPhones can thus accept payments without the need for a payment card terminal or other hardware. However, the framework is not yet active and beta testers cannot use it yet, so it cannot be said that Apple will launch the service with iOS 15.4.

ProMotion in third-party applications

The iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max came with a 120Hz adaptive display refresh rate, but support in third-party apps has been limited until now due to a bug that truncated most animations at 60Hz. In iOS 15.4, this bug is finally fixed.

iPadOS 15.4

Keyboard brightness

In iPadOS 15.4, there is a new Keyboard Brightness option that can be added to the Control Center. It is simply used so that you can use it to adjust the brightness of the connected backlit keyboard.

Notes

The note-taking app learns new gestures that invoke functions you define when you swipe to a corner of the app. This expands the functionality of Quick Notes.

Universal control

iPadOS 15.4 and macOS 12.3 finally offer the long-awaited Universal Control feature, which is supposed to allow controlling iPads and Macs signed in to a single iCloud account with a single mouse cursor and a single keyboard. So if you own a MacBook and an iPad, you can, for example, use the MacBook's trackpad and keyboard directly on the iPad's display.

macOS 12.3 and others

Even in the case of macOS 12.3, "universal control" will be the main novelty. Apart from it, the palette of emoticons will also be expanded to include the same symbols that will be available on iOS and also in iPadOS. You will also now be able to update your AirPods via a Mac computer and not just via an iPhone or iPad. Other new features include support for the PS5 DualSense controller or improved ScreenCaptureKit for high-performance screen recording. Neither Watch 8.5 and not even TvOS 15.4 then they don't bring any really interesting features and rather just remove known bugs.
