The A15 Bionic is the most advanced chip Apple has put into an iPhone. News is currently circulating around the world that the company had to reduce production by 10 million units of iPhone 13 due to the current semiconductor crisis. But even if the mentioned chip is really the company's, it does not produce it itself. And therein lies the problem.

If Apple built a chip production line, it could cut out one chip at a time and fit them into its products based on how much (or little) they sell for. But Apple does not have such production capacity, and therefore orders chips from companies such as Samsung and TSMC (Taiwan Semi-Conductor Manufacturing Company).

The first-mentioned makes chips for older products, while the latter is in charge not only of the A series, i.e. the one intended for iPhones, but also, for example, the M series for computers with Apple Silicon, S for the Apple Watch or W for audio accessories. As such, there is not just one chip in the iPhone, as many may think, but there are a number of more or less advanced ones that take care of various properties and mechanisms. Everything revolves around the main one, but certainly not the only one.

New factories, brighter tomorrows

TSMC in addition currently confirmed, that a new company plant will be built in Japan due to an effort to increase the production of insufficient chips. Together with Sony and the Japanese government, it will cost the company $7 billion, but on the other hand, it could help stabilize the market in the future. This is also because production will move from problematic Taiwan to Japan. However, the most interesting thing is that premium chips will not be produced here, but those whose production takes place using the older 22 and 28nm technology (eg chips for camera image sensors).

Chip shortages are trending across the internet, whether it's the latest chip for a mobile phone or the dumbest chip for an alarm clock. But if you read the insider analysts' outlook, next year everything should start to turn for the better. Plus, iPhones have always been in short supply once they were released, and you just had to wait for them. Anyway, if you don't want to wait too long, be sure to order early, especially the Pro models.
