Apple's forums have been plagued by an issue involving the 2011-inch and XNUMX-inch MacBook Pros since early XNUMX. Some users are reporting that their AMD graphics processor has completely died and the only solution is an expensive replacement of the entire motherboard.

The issue has surfaced in several threads on Apple's official discussion forums. At first, the error manifests itself in graphical malfunctions, in the worst case, then the entire system freezes. And this at the moment when the MacBook Pro switches from integrated graphics from Intel to a separate graphics processor from AMD.

Mentions of this defect first appeared in February of this year, but during the last month they became more and more frequent.

Switching between graphics processors cannot be controlled by the user, as Apple introduced an automatic system for switching between integrated and dedicated graphics in 2010. Until then, users had to switch to a more powerful graphics card manually in the settings, which required a system restart.

The problem during switching is most often accompanied by a change of colors on the display, a blurring of the image, but for some users, MacBook Pros freeze immediately without the graphics card warning them in advance. At that point, a restart is usually not the solution, and even trying to force the computer to use the integrated graphics chip is usually not successful.

The mentioned problem mainly affects users of early 2011 MacBook Pro with AMD Radeon 6750M graphics processor, but the problem can also occur on other machines with Radeon 6490M, 6750M and 6970M graphics processors.

Apple has not yet responded and users complain that the only way they can save their MacBook Pro now is to replace the entire motherboard, which will cost at least 10 crowns. However, Apple has already solved a similar problem in the past and addressed it with a special build of OS X 10.6.7.
