Apple's forums have been plagued by an issue involving the 2011-inch and XNUMX-inch MacBook Pros since early XNUMX. Some users are reporting that their AMD graphics processor has completely died and the only solution is an expensive replacement of the entire motherboard.
The issue has surfaced in several threads on Apple's official discussion forums. At first, the error manifests itself in graphical malfunctions, in the worst case, then the entire system freezes. And this at the moment when the MacBook Pro switches from integrated graphics from Intel to a separate graphics processor from AMD.
Mentions of this defect first appeared in February of this year, but during the last month they became more and more frequent.
Switching between graphics processors cannot be controlled by the user, as Apple introduced an automatic system for switching between integrated and dedicated graphics in 2010. Until then, users had to switch to a more powerful graphics card manually in the settings, which required a system restart.
The problem during switching is most often accompanied by a change of colors on the display, a blurring of the image, but for some users, MacBook Pros freeze immediately without the graphics card warning them in advance. At that point, a restart is usually not the solution, and even trying to force the computer to use the integrated graphics chip is usually not successful.
The mentioned problem mainly affects users of early 2011 MacBook Pro with AMD Radeon 6750M graphics processor, but the problem can also occur on other machines with Radeon 6490M, 6750M and 6970M graphics processors.
Apple has not yet responded and users complain that the only way they can save their MacBook Pro now is to replace the entire motherboard, which will cost at least 10 crowns. However, Apple has already solved a similar problem in the past and addressed it with a special build of OS X 10.6.7.
Have you experienced the same issue on your MacBook Pro?
I THINK A REASONABLE PERSON WILL BUY AIR OR ALL IN ONE.
Macbook pro is rubbish
What if the reasonable person wants more than a 13″ display? I see? These categorical judgments always make me laugh.
As a reportage photographer who often processes photos in the field, the AIR is underperforming for me, so the macbook pro is the obvious choice.
Can you please explain to me how you edit photos in the sun on a display that shines like dog bullets?
well, the explanation is simple, you have a matte display and a resolution of 1600×1050 at least, and it's fine, the same is with the retina, you can also order a matte display, but the price will be about 65-70k with 16GB....
Take a look at the configurator again. You cannot order a rear matte (antiglare) display with retina. You can only buy a Facebook mirror. Unfortunately. On top of that, the classic Pro will definitely go away soon, so you won't buy a mat anymore. The Apple team has definitely finished with the production of professional notebooks.
aha, they told me in style that it was possible and I found out the estimated price there as well....
Hide from the sun, try foil from 3M
What are you talking about ? I think that even a regular user (notice that it's not me) will use it for a reason, moreover, as someone already mentioned here, the 15 is still a clear choice for many people..Whether it's for pleasure or for work
someone is trying to flame here again, huh? :D
A new motherboard definitely costs more than 15. however, it can be fixed. It's always cheaper than replacing the motherboard.
how much does the replacement cost? They did it for me in the Czech service for 11043 CZK without VAT
We only repair, but it depends on what else is damaged on the board. Only the GPU will rarely go away. The most difficult (most time-consuming) is the exact identification of damage, or even defective SMD components. The average price is around 7 thousand CZK incl. VAT
I observe this with my MBP. If there is any further information, I would welcome it, I would not like MBP to send it to me :-)
I am currently solving a problem on my MB pro 13 MID 2012. My disk stopped working, I thought the problem was in the disk, so I put it in another PC and it shows that everything is ok. After returning, it ran for about 5 minutes, then the system froze and did not start. reinstallation is not possible because the mac does not see the disk.
If there is a warranty, then a complaint.
I changed the disk to an SSD, they said that the warranty is void
utter nonsense, take out the SSD and beat them over the head. When changing HDD/SSD and RAM, the warranty does not apply
Exactly... how can the warranty be void when in the instructions for use directly with the macbook they write how to replace the HDD and Ram... The warranty is void only if you remove the CD-ROM drive and put in an SSD :-)
As Robin writes, return the original disk and insist on a claim.
yes, yes, three days after replacing the motherboard, my display started to move (roughly jumps of the image) and break through, one day after starting up, lines appeared and the image moved 15 cm to the side and then it was impossible to turn it on at all. Seat screen : ( I thought it was due to the replacement of hdd with ssd and swapping frames, but to my credit, it was what is described on the apple forum...;(
I have a mbp early 2011 with an AMD 6750M and no problems. Well, for now.
Disk replaced with SSD, RAM expanded to 8GB.
maybe it would be enough to remap the graphics chip
or replace it straight away, just the chip
This may not always be sufficient. Other components often fail as well, and it cannot be narrowly specified in this way. These problems tend to be more complex.
and can it be traced, when you lose a laptop, when there is a problem with the motherboard, is it a problem or is it piece by piece?
More like piece by piece.
I'm considering a MacBook with Retina and this scares me. First the burning of some displays, now defective graphics.. :-(
This is not a retina thing, but a classic Pro thing. And if you think that the competition will have a greater guarantee of quality….
And as for the displays. It was a defective series (panels from Sharp) and Apple will replace them without a word, even after warranty. Even if the panel is perfectly fine. He just replaces it just to be safe because he knows these panels are defective. I don't know of any other brand that treats its customers like this.
I also don't see any other piece of HW that is so overpriced :-)) When I look at the details of the latest MB Air line, I am catching up with the Jezus brand with loving steps.
I don't know this brand so I can't judge... do you have a link?
These were not Sharp panels, they are not in retina Pro 2011 at all. These were panels from LG.
Hey don't hit me.. I just said it scares me :-)
Well, that's my assignment. I have a 17″ latest model, 2011, AMD 6750. I know that replacing the board costs 17 thousand, which is the amount sending the device to the dump or to parts. Not only do you shell out a considerable sum for the device, but you are stripped down to your shorts for the second time when changing the board. I note that I had no idea when I bought it. But I was in contact with a person who was affected by this and was selling an 18 month old 17″ for parts. The service was apparently innocent, Apple makes those boards so expensive. They want to have a fat margin on this too..
Is there any instruction on how to behave? I am using gfxStartStatus toggling graphics. Basically, I switch myself, integrated is enough for everything, only for HD video AMD is more logically drawn. Leave it on integrated..? I'll try to look into it when I let you know.
MBP 15 "Early 2011 - i7 from the beginning is quite slow during normal development (xCode) with an external monitor. First, after 2 years, one fan stopped working, after its replacement, the motherboard was replaced 3 times (once paid for), it seems that Apple sends you the old board for 12 liters... or is it a coincidence that 2 out of 3 don't work? In any case, you will receive an old model of the board, they will not return your money if you did not pay 30 liters...
Guys, is this the one in the attached picture? MBP 13″ Early 2011, i5, Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 Mb. Sometimes (once a month) it happened that my MB got bitten, froze, started beeping, these bars popped up on the display and the only solution was to disconnect it from the source or hard reset. Last week it started happening several times a day, now it's quiet for a while... :-/ Does anyone have a similar experience??
Hello,
MacBook Pro 15″ Early 2011, motherboard replacement at a price of 11 last month. The problem began to manifest itself in occasional freezing when working in the remote desktop window on the Windows system. Within 2 days, the computer froze reliably when connecting an HDMI monitor via a Thunderbolt adapter. In the service, they confirmed the assumption that there is something with the graphics. 1 week from the first receipt to complete non-functionality.
PS: the price shown is based on the return of the defective board to Apple, in case you would like a defective board, the repair price is about 1/3 higher. The service also offers to repair the motherboard for a price of about 5 thousand, maybe it's just for re-balling.
So iMac 2011 and now Macbooks also have problems with displays and graphics. Well, that's quality to me.
My Air 2011 also started restarting, and replacing the topcase+board fixed it. It's worth the price. After communicating with Apple, I only paid 1000 CZK for the work and praise for the Czech service.
With the iMac, on the other hand, Apple does not routinely replace the GPU even though it is aware of the problem.
Hi, I don't know why you're making such a panic about it here... (probably it's just due to lack of information) these days it's an absolutely standard "defect" in all laptops, televisions, motherboards, printers, cars, washing machines and I don't know what else. It's simply about longevity. I don't want to go into details about who is to blame and who is not, you can find a lot of material on the internet about why it is so... I know, because I work in this field, that today in a decent service where they manage PCs they will "almost" do it for you for approx. 3500. with VAT in terms of graphics or chipset, that's the regular price. I will not advertise! One last thing, every experienced technician can recognize these faults when you pick up the handle, so any lengthy search for a fault is just to make you feel how complicated and expensive it is, to get more money out of the customer, or is he an amateur... .. I can't do it and one more personal note, I think this was created in 2005 when the EU banned the use of lead in electronics (like ecology :-)) )
So, for example, such a GPU for an iMac costs 6500, - without tax, if it is the 6970 + 2GB variant and it is the card itself in the slot, no soldering of the chip.
By "they will" I mean replace the faulty chip…..the three month warranty is also the usual warranty period for these repairs
For me, only the color temperature changed on mountain lion... on Mavericks, it does nothing when switching graphics cards... and it runs for about 12 hours a day... I've had it for a year and I do everything from video editing, video conversion and everything on it :-) So I hope that this problem won't affect me :-) I have a 6750M ... But luckily I bought it exactly on the day a year ago :-) so I still have a one-year warranty from Qstore :-) If it works for me, I would immediately send it in for a claim :-)
and otherwise 80 percent of the time my laptop is running ATI Graphics because I have an External Monitor connected :-)
Cus, I sent you an email, but maybe it went to your spam folder.
Please write me a link where you can download Maverick for free (see. One month after buying a new macbook you have the right to a free update.). You can email vilduv on the list or here. Thanks
Cuss :-) I received an email :-) no mention of it :-) but I couldn't find the link anymore :-) wait for some time after 22.10. :-) it will be written everywhere how to get it, and even on the Keynote itself there will definitely be some sentence that it will be free for certain individuals, for example with the purchase of a Macbook after WWDC in June :-) or Mavericks will really be free :-) I won't tell you now :-)
OK patience ;-). By the way, recommend something to recover data from hfs+?
data recovery ?? like when your disk breaks or what do you mean?? :-)
Like when you accidentally delete the entire hfs+ partition O:-). I saw a lot, but it's all quite expensive ;-). I'd rather use some free program ;-).
Finally, someone wrote it.. We had big problems with it at the company, when 5 MacBook Pro 15″ suddenly died in January and February at the company.
We really didn't understand what I really started to think that Apple was playing a joke on me. Unfortunately, the pieces were already out of the one-year warranty, so we had to repair it, somewhere the whole board was replaced, somewhere the chip and two were just connected. But I didn't understand that 1/3 of all the laptops we have in the company died within two months.. :(
Hehe, almost 8 years old article, but I have to respond anyway. My MacBook Pro 15″ from the beginning of 2011 (now I am writing from it) worked for 10 years without any problems, the performance was sufficient even for my work (editor and music producer). Only the day before yesterday, after 10 years! the chip died. With nothing to lose, I tried the following:
I disassembled it to the screw, stripped the motherboard of all components and heatsinks, put it in a preheated oven at 190 degrees for 7 minutes ... followed by applying new thermal paste ... and voila ... I'm writing you back now from a fully functional MacBook ... but it's not a long-term solution, I expect him to kneel again in a few months ... then just a bypass
