At the beginning of last year, information appeared that the German automaker BMW intends to charge for the Apple CarPlay function. This would not be so unusual, as CarPlay (together with Android Auto) is often an element of additional equipment. However, BMW took it from the floor and the service charged on a monthly basis. However, after a wave of negative reactions, it finally decided to change its position.

The responsible management of BMW obviously registered the wave of resentment that arose after this decision. The automaker has therefore reassessed its stance and the current situation is that the subscription is being canceled and Bavarian owners will have Apple CarPlay available for free, provided they have the latest version of BMW ConnectedDrive infotainment in their car.

For older models that are not compatible with the aforementioned infotainment, owners will have to pay a one-time fee to install the appropriate module that will enable Apple CarPlay in their car. However, CarPlay will be available for free on new cars. This change should be applied globally.

It is also not yet clear how the car company will deal with the cases of owners who are still paying for the service, or who have prepaid for it for a longer period of time. However, it is important for new owners that they no longer have to count on unnecessary extra costs, however small they may be compared to the purchase price of a new car.
