Even unbiased observers of the technological world certainly did not miss the fact that the popular application WhatsApp is changing its conditions, specifically in such a way that it will transfer a relatively large amount of data to Facebook, which intends to use it to personalize advertisements. Despite the fact that the technology giant postponed the introduction of these conditions by exactly a quarter of a year, specifically to May 15, the migration of WhatsApp users to other platforms does not stop. But why is everyone worried when WhatsApp chokes that it can't even collect data from messages and calls because it uses end-to-end encryption? Today we will try to focus on this issue from several points of view.

What makes WhatsApp terms so problematic?

I have come across many opinions that it is completely irrelevant to address the WhatsApp conditions in any way. Primarily because most users use Facebook Messenger or Instagram to communicate, thanks to which Facebook has already obtained the desired information about them. However, I personally do not think that this fact should be a reason for caution, mainly because it is always better to use as few "spying" applications as possible on the phone. Another thing is social networks as such - if you are in a public space, whether on the Internet or in the city, you probably do not try to hide your identity from other people. But in an app that's primarily for private communication, you probably don't want to share your data with other people or the company that runs the software.

Leaks don't exactly boost Facebook's credibility

As for private messages, Facebook or WhatsApp should not be able to access them, as they are ultimately encrypted, according to the developers. But that still doesn't mean you've won. This is because Facebook learns about you via WhatsApp, from which IP address you log in, which phone you use and many other data related to you. This should be at least alarming for you, but I understand that this is not something that could be absolutely essential for everyone.

However, none of you will be happy if your confidential conversations fall into unauthorized hands. If you've followed Facebook over the past few years, you probably know that it's dealt with countless issues related to leaks of various information, messages, and passwords. Yes, no company is perfect, but coupled with the controversial handling of personal data, I don't think Facebook is the one you should trust.

The coronavirus, or a greater emphasis on privacy?

Both work and personal communication takes place around the world using various online tools designed for this purpose. Personal contact was limited, so even confidential matters were handled through communication channels. Related to this is an even greater emphasis on privacy by end users, as they simply do not want any stranger to read their conversations. Sure, Facebook developers certainly won't be digging through your messages to find out exactly what you wrote to whom, but that still doesn't mean that someone else won't be interested in that data, and in the case of the above-mentioned leak, you certainly wouldn't be happy if your private account received.

With the current dominance of WhatsApp, is it a good time to switch to another platform?

Despite Facebook's efforts to clarify its missteps, more and more defectors are still flocking to applications such as Signal, Viber, Telegram or Threema, and WhatsApp is falling steeply in the popularity of the most downloaded applications. If you are in contact with only a few people, and they have long since switched, or are one step away from switching to a more secure alternative, deactivating your WhatsApp account probably won't hurt you that much. But as you surely know, communication also takes place in a work or school environment. In this case, it will probably be very difficult for you to persuade 500 people to move to another platform. In such a case, switching to another platform is not easy, and you have to hope that circumstances help you to get as many people as possible to your favorite safe alternative.
