Apple introduced the new generation iPhone OS in version 4. Although we offered here at Jablíčkář.cz detailed report, so I would like to summarize the most important points for you.
The new iPhone OS 4 will bring a lot of new options for developers to create even better applications. The new iPhone OS 4 includes a total of 100 new features, with Apple focusing on the 7 most important.
multitasking
Definitely the biggest new feature of iPhone OS 4. They will be able to run in the background:
- Audio-radios
- VoIP application - Skype
- Localization - TomTom can navigate by voice, e.g. while surfing the web, or social applications can notify you of a friend checking in nearby (e.g. Foursquare)
- Push notifications - as we know them until now
- Local notification – there is no need for a server as with push notifications, so you can, for example, be notified of an event from the task list (e.g. Things or ToDo)
- Completing tasks - uploading a photo to Flickr may be in progress even though you have already exited the application
- Quick application switching – the application saves its state when switching and it is possible to quickly return to it at any time
Folders
It is now possible to sort iPhone applications into folders. Instead of a maximum of 180 applications, you can have over 2000 applications on the iPhone screen. Newly, it is not a problem to even change the background on the iPhone.
Improved Mail application and functions for the business sphere
You can have multiple Exchange accounts, a unified inbox for multiple mailboxes, creating conversations or the ability to open attachments in 3rd party applications from the Appstore. For the business sector, there is, for example, support for Microsoft Server 2010, better email security or SSL VPN support.
iBooks
The book store and the iBooks book reader will not be the domain of the iPad only. In iPhone OS 4, even iPhone owners will be waiting. It will be possible to synchronize both content and bookmarks wirelessly.
Game Center
A social gaming network that can probably compete with and eventually replace networks like OpenFeit or Plus+. I see the unification into one network as a plus, and it shouldn't be difficult to convince developers to use Game Center instead of existing networks. We will be able to challenge friends here, there will also be leaderboards and achievements.
hell
An advertising platform that will be led by Apple itself. Ads will not be shown to us the entire time you use the app, but probably once every 3 minutes. These won't be annoying ads opening in Safari, but rather interactive apps within the app. When clicked, an HTML5 widget will be launched, which will include things like a video, a minigame, an iPhone background, and much more. This is an interesting approach that could work. Facebook is trying to push a similar approach with its advertisers, although not in such a massive form, it is a kind of new trend. For developers, 60% of the income will go to advertising (a rich reward for developers).
When and for what devices?
Developers received iPhone OS 4 today for testing and creating applications. iPhone OS 4 will be released to the public this summer. All news will be available for the iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch of the third generation, but multitasking, for example, will not work on the iPhone 3G or older iPod Touch. iPhone OS 4 will appear for the iPad in the fall.
A huge disappointment for me. No innovation... I would like to ask Jobs what they actually did ahead of the competition, it is incomprehensible to me that he announced to the world at a special event that the iPhone can finally change the background, put applications in folders or run a couple of applications at once. Which competitor's smartphone can't do it?
All new Windows Phone Series 7 or what is the name of this thing now? :)
Well, as a 3G owner, I'm neither pleased nor disappointed that the 3GS and 4.0 iphone will have something I couldn't be without. The important remains unresolved and the unimportant has been processed. Anyway, I agree with Tibor: making a hurrah about the fact that finally after three years we can change the background of the desktop, the applications are moved to a folder and having more than one 3rd party application on seems at least embarrassing to me and in the words "it will run away from the competition like the first iPhone". If I leave out WMPhouns as unusable devices, in this area the iPhone is not that it has not overtaken, but it has not caught up either. They should have made the system more agile, made a lock screen where information from the calendar, things, etc. would be collected, and that was it. I note that I am the owner of 3G and I hate WM!
So full, I find it brisk enough in itself. In this respect, the iPhone is still far ahead of the competition (and I only have 3G, formerly WM). No intervention in the lockscreen is definitely disappointing, as are unchanged popup notifications. For me, this means only one thing - to wait for JB 4.0 and upload the favorite things I'm used to, i.e. Lock Calendar, SBSettings and the like. The guys from Cupertino have taken some good things from Cydia (Backgrounder, Categories, Bosspaper/Winterboard) and turned them into official Apple iPhone features. As for other things, they just replaced OpenFeint (which was never useful to me anyway, just slowed down games) and made a competitor for Stanza, where I won't just buy Czech books anyway. Way to go, Steve…
I agree
OS 4.0 is rather disappointing, I would take it as version 3.3, as version 4.0 it is more like the "necessary minimum".
He did not overtake the competition, the competition now has the opportunity to run away from him.
The iPhone lacks a better lock screen, and especially proper notification management, or pop-up windows, which in combination with the new multitasking will be more annoying than ever before.
And this is because there will be more of them and, for example, in the background of completed actions, they will annoy you even when switching from application to application.
I like Apple, I have a Macbook, an iPhone, I had an iPod touch... however, os 4.0 should have looked completely different. I hope competing Android forces Apple to make better improvements in the future and not just the bare minimum.
Jojo, the iOS4 is not very innovative, but what can we do with it if Apple does not hurry with the news? I personally enjoy the multitasking, although it is not the discovery of America.
I had no idea how to approach this before-now I'm locked and tired.
