AppleInsider added fuel to the fire with his new speculation. With the arrival of the iPad 3, the price of the iPad 2 could drop to $299.
Publications DigiTimes (Taiwanese publication on Apple's specific assumptions and intentions) mentioned an interesting idea. With the arrival of the Apple iPad 3, the existing second-generation tablet could be discounted to $299. AppleInsider published some interesting information from this publication that if Apple wants to keep the iPad 2 in circulation, it will need to lower its price since it will no longer be the latest model.
Given the well-known policy of reducing the prices of older devices, Apple could discount the tablet to $399 or $349, even $299, as analysts believe. Given the competition from the Amazon Kindle Fire tablet, which currently costs $199 and is considered a low-end tablet, Apple could aggressively approach this price range as well and bring it as low as possible, even assuming that it wants to keep the iPad 2 still high-end tablet.
There was also speculation as to whether Apple would really present two tablets, one for demanding users - with a Retina Display, an 8 Mpx camera, and one for less demanding users equipped with only a 5 Mpx camera. (Editor's note: this move seems rather unlikely to us, it goes against the company's philosophy of one key product.)
The same publication also said that the company is starting to reduce orders for the iPad 2, but (I quote) "it's still too early to say anything". It is not clear which tablet will be sold, at what prices and in what variants. Still, the move could represent a good attack on Amazon, which sells its Kindle Fire at prices that don't even match production costs and subsidizes the tablet from other revenue-generating activities.

if the ipad2 was cheaper to 299 euro... what would everyone who bought an ipad2 for Christmas for 500 say? :) it's not likely, it will just go down by a much smaller amount
Therefore, there are three price categories: $399, $349 and $299. DigiTimes isn't saying it will, just that it's possible.
I have an iPad 2 and I bought it as soon as it was available on SR for 470 euros. If it goes down to 299, it will probably beat me, how much I plan to buy three and sell two. However, I will definitely not sell the iPad 2, which is still under warranty for a year and in 100% condition with a drop of 170 euros. People will buy an iPad even if it's more expensive, Apple has proven it many times and knows it well....:)
Yes. You're right that people buy quality, so if he dropped the price so quickly, a lot of people wouldn't feel good about it. But it is true that the iPad 2 would be more affordable and would deal an even bigger blow to the competition. Well, let's see, maybe the price will end up being only $349. All we have to do is wait.
Well, the price will definitely go down, at least for stock, but it's never clear whether Apple will stop the product and sell only the new one, or do something similar to the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 8GB at the same time, the same could go with the 16GB iPad 2... I certainly wouldn't expect, that it will continue to sell all 12 versions of the iPad 2, it will choose one configuration and sell it here, reducing it to 4 configurations. Personally, however, I'm waiting for the iPad 3 ;) I find the current display unsatisfactory, even if I appreciate the discounts on the current iPad 2, although not for myself, but I will appreciate it. Personally, I am curious about what the Apple A6 will bring, as well as the new battery and processor. It will certainly be a very interesting piece of HW.
