For a long time now, Apple has presented its tablets as machines that can replace a computer, and even if this claim is true in some cases, it is in a way an advertising move. A large number of users, especially students and such users who focus on office work, simpler graphics or video and music editing, can do without a computer. However, if you are, for example, a developer or you need to use system virtualization for work, then you certainly know that an iPad or any other tablet will not replace a computer for the time being. Personally, I belong to the group of people who can fully function with the iPad, because I don't need to program on it, etc. So you can't make a computer out of any tablet yet, but in today's article we will show you some tips on how to turn it into a full-fledged work tool.

Connect external drives

If you use an iPad Pro (2020) or iPad Pro (2018), thanks to the universal USB-C connector, you don't have to worry about not being able to get an external drive or flash drive with this connector - and if you have an older external drive with a USB-A connector at home, just buy a reduction. However, users of other iPads must purchase a special adapter that, in addition to Lightning and USB-A connectors, also includes a Lightning port for power. The only one that works reliably in my experience is original from Apple. However, connecting external drives to iPadOS has its limits. The biggest one is that it has problem with NTFS format from Windows computers. As in macOS, NTFS drives can only be viewed and not written to, and you can't format them in iPadOS either. Another problem is that Lightning is not quite built for fast data flow, which will not limit you in the case of transferring documents, but it is worse with larger files.

Get your peripherals

The iPad is a great tool for traveling and works perfectly with it basically anywhere, but if you need to write longer texts or edit photos and videos, it's a good idea to get a keyboard, mouse or external monitor. If you don't feel like investing a large sum of money in a Smart Keyboard Folio or Magic Keyboard, you can connect any Bluetooth keyboard, the same applies to the Magic Mouse and other wireless mice. Very high quality keyboard i mice you can purchase from Logitech. However, if you plan to have the iPad constantly connected to an external monitor and constantly use the keyboard and mouse, it is worth considering whether it will be more advantageous for you to buy a classic computer. The advantage of the iPad lies mainly in its versatility, where you can take it anywhere and connect and disconnect external peripherals when necessary.

Using keyboard shortcuts

In iPadOS, you will find a plethora of different keyboard shortcuts. It is unrealistic to remember all of them, but if, for example, you write documents in Word every day, the shortcuts will definitely come in handy. It is enough to call up the list of available ones hold down the Cmd key. If you are used to Windows computers, Cmd is located in the same place as the Windows key.

Do not despair in case of missing applications

In the App Store for iPad you will find an abundance of useful software, but of course it may happen that the one you used before on the computer is missing or does not have all the functions. However, this does not mean that you will not find a suitable, and often better, alternative for it. For example, Adobe Photoshop for iPad won't work with the desktop version, but Affinity Photo will replace it.
