Operating systems are getting a bit boring for us lately. It does bring certain news, but they are rather limited and to justify the release of a new version. But iOS 18 is supposed to be big. Even the biggest. Why?

How much of the latest iOS news are you actually actively using? You probably won't even list the major ones that came with iOS 17, let alone the ones we've had in iPhones since iOS 16. Even though new operating systems are highly anticipated, it's usually with regard to one or two novelties at most that we try out and overwhelmingly we'll miss them anyway. In less cases, only the sleep mode from iOS 17 and the option to edit the locked screen from iOS 16 were caught.

The last major change to Apple's operating system itself occurred with iOS 7, when Apple ditched the reality-like application interface and switched to a so-called "flat" design. Nothing major has happened since then. Until this year - that is, it is supposed to happen at least, which we will officially find out at WWDC24 in June. At the same time, none other than Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

The more features, the more confusion?

According to him, iOS 18 is being developed with a lot of new features to be signed in the entire iPhone environment. Paradoxically, the redesign is what people remember more than some features, and if Apple purposefully changes the look, it can have its positives. Of course, these changes can also take place due to the implementation of artificial intelligence. Even Samsung had to modify in order to be able to bring its Galaxy AI to One UI 6.1. For example, he got rid of the unique gesture control, leaving Google's (and the one with virtual buttons) as the only standard option.

Apple wants to improve Siri, it wants more sophisticated automatic replies in Messages, it wants AI-generated playlists in Apple Music, it wants to create different summaries in its applications, etc. But not everyone needs AI functions and wants to use them (or even has no idea why they should). And this is where Apple can stumble. Just as everyone is rebelling against Samsung's control and it is already rushing to some options, Apple can redesign for artificial intelligence that only less advanced users will confuse in the head.

That's fine for us, because we are interested in the issue and like to receive news. But then there are those who are confused with each update, when something is displayed differently and when a menu is moved to another place. Current operating systems are certainly not intuitive or simple, unless you want to limit yourself to some lightweight modes. In any case, it will be very interesting to see whether Apple can match Samsung and Google's AI with its AI, or completely wipe out these rivals.
