iOS 11 will mainly make using the familiar system more pleasant and efficient. But it can also surprise with useful little things. It makes iPads, especially the Pro, a much more capable tool.

Again, one wants to mention the gradual improvement and (with the exception of the iPad Pro) the absence of big news, but not quite rightly so. iOS 11, like several previous ones, probably won't fundamentally change the way we treat Apple's most popular devices, but it will probably noticeably improve the experience of the iOS platform.

In iOS 11 we find a better control center, a smarter Siri, a more social Apple Music, a more capable camera, a new look for the App Store, and augmented reality is gaining ground in a big way. But let's start with the first launch, there are news there too.

Automatic setting

A newly purchased iPhone with iOS 11 installed will be as easy to set up as the Apple Watch. A hard-to-describe ornament appears on the display, which is enough to be read by another iOS device or the user's Mac, after which personal settings and passwords from the iCloud keychain are automatically loaded into the new iPhone.

Lock screen

iOS 10 significantly changed the content of the lock screen and notification center, iOS 11 further modifies it. The lock screen and Notification Center have basically merged into one bar that primarily displays the latest notification and an overview of all the others below.

Control Center

Control Center has undergone the most obvious revitalization of all of iOS. There is a question as to whether its new form is clearer, but it is undoubtedly more efficient, as it unifies controls and music on one screen and uses 3D Touch to display more detailed information or switches. Also great news is that you can finally choose which toggles are available from Control Center in Settings.

Apple Music

Apple Music is again trying to expand interactions not only between the user and the device, but also between users. Each of them has their own profile with favorite artists, stations and playlists, friends can follow each other and their music preferences and discoveries influence the music recommended by the algorithms.

App Store

The App Store has undergone another major overhaul in iOS 11, this time probably the biggest since its launch. The basic concept is still the same – the store is divided into sections accessible from the bottom bar, the main page is divided into sections according to editors' choice, news and discounts, individual applications have their own pages with information and ratings, etc.

The main sections are now the tabs Today, Games and Applications (+ of course updates and search). The Today section contains large tabs of editor-selected apps and games with "stories" about new apps, updates, behind-the-scenes information, feature and control tips, various app lists, daily recommendations, etc. The "Games" and "Apps" sections are much more similar to the new App Store's otherwise non-existent general "Recommended" section.

The pages of individual applications are very comprehensive, more clearly divided and much more focused on user reviews, developer reactions and editors' comments.

Camera and Live Photos

In addition to new filters, the camera also has new photo processing algorithms that improve the quality of portrait photos in particular, and has also switched to a new image storage format that can save up to half of the space while maintaining image quality. With Live Photos, you can select the main window and use new effects that create continuous loops, looping clips and still photos with a long exposure effect that artistically blurs moving parts of the image.

Crab

Apple uses machine learning and artificial intelligence the most, of course, with Siri, which as a result should understand better and respond more humanly (expressively and with a natural voice). It also knows more about users and, based on their interests, recommends articles in the News application (still unavailable in the Czech Republic) and, for example, events in the calendar based on confirmed reservations in Safari.

Furthermore, when typing on the keyboard (again, it does not apply to the Czech language), according to the context and what the given user was previously doing on the device, it suggests locations and names of movies or even the estimated time of arrival. At the same time, Apple emphasizes that none of the information that Siri discovers about the user is available outside of the user's device. Apple uses end-to-end encryption everywhere, and users don't have to sacrifice their privacy for convenience.

Siri has also learned to translate, so far between English, Chinese, Spanish, French, German and Italian.

Do not disturb mode, QuickType keyboard, AirPlay 2, Maps

As mentioned at the beginning of the article, the list of useful little things is long. The Do Not Disturb mode, for example, has a new profile that automatically starts when driving and won't show any notifications unless it's something urgent.

The keyboard simplifies one-handed typing with a special mode that moves all letters to the side closer to the thumb, either to the right or to the left.

AirPlay 2 is a customized control of multiple speakers simultaneously or independently (and is also available for third-party application developers).

Maps are able to display navigation arrows for road lanes and even interior maps in selected locations.

Augmented reality

After a still far from complete list of capabilities and utilities, it is necessary to mention perhaps the biggest novelty of iOS 11 for developers and, as a result, users – ARKit. This is a developer framework of tools for creating augmented reality, in which the real world directly blends with the virtual. During the presentation on the stage, mainly games were mentioned and one from the company Wingnut AR was presented, but augmented reality has great potential in many industries.

iOS 11 availability

A developer trial is available immediately. The public trial version, which can also be used by non-developers, should be released in the second half of June. The official full version will be released as usual in the fall and will be available for iPhone 5S and later, all iPad Air and iPad Pro, iPad 5th generation, iPad mini 2 and later, and iPod touch 6th generation.
