iOS 11 will mainly make using the familiar system more pleasant and efficient. But it can also surprise with useful little things. It makes iPads, especially the Pro, a much more capable tool.
Again, one wants to mention the gradual improvement and (with the exception of the iPad Pro) the absence of big news, but not quite rightly so. iOS 11, like several previous ones, probably won't fundamentally change the way we treat Apple's most popular devices, but it will probably noticeably improve the experience of the iOS platform.
In iOS 11 we find a better control center, a smarter Siri, a more social Apple Music, a more capable camera, a new look for the App Store, and augmented reality is gaining ground in a big way. But let's start with the first launch, there are news there too.
Automatic setting
A newly purchased iPhone with iOS 11 installed will be as easy to set up as the Apple Watch. A hard-to-describe ornament appears on the display, which is enough to be read by another iOS device or the user's Mac, after which personal settings and passwords from the iCloud keychain are automatically loaded into the new iPhone.
Lock screen
iOS 10 significantly changed the content of the lock screen and notification center, iOS 11 further modifies it. The lock screen and Notification Center have basically merged into one bar that primarily displays the latest notification and an overview of all the others below.
Control Center
Control Center has undergone the most obvious revitalization of all of iOS. There is a question as to whether its new form is clearer, but it is undoubtedly more efficient, as it unifies controls and music on one screen and uses 3D Touch to display more detailed information or switches. Also great news is that you can finally choose which toggles are available from Control Center in Settings.
Apple Music
Apple Music is again trying to expand interactions not only between the user and the device, but also between users. Each of them has their own profile with favorite artists, stations and playlists, friends can follow each other and their music preferences and discoveries influence the music recommended by the algorithms.
App Store
The App Store has undergone another major overhaul in iOS 11, this time probably the biggest since its launch. The basic concept is still the same – the store is divided into sections accessible from the bottom bar, the main page is divided into sections according to editors' choice, news and discounts, individual applications have their own pages with information and ratings, etc.
The main sections are now the tabs Today, Games and Applications (+ of course updates and search). The Today section contains large tabs of editor-selected apps and games with "stories" about new apps, updates, behind-the-scenes information, feature and control tips, various app lists, daily recommendations, etc. The "Games" and "Apps" sections are much more similar to the new App Store's otherwise non-existent general "Recommended" section.
The pages of individual applications are very comprehensive, more clearly divided and much more focused on user reviews, developer reactions and editors' comments.
Camera and Live Photos
In addition to new filters, the camera also has new photo processing algorithms that improve the quality of portrait photos in particular, and has also switched to a new image storage format that can save up to half of the space while maintaining image quality. With Live Photos, you can select the main window and use new effects that create continuous loops, looping clips and still photos with a long exposure effect that artistically blurs moving parts of the image.
Crab
Apple uses machine learning and artificial intelligence the most, of course, with Siri, which as a result should understand better and respond more humanly (expressively and with a natural voice). It also knows more about users and, based on their interests, recommends articles in the News application (still unavailable in the Czech Republic) and, for example, events in the calendar based on confirmed reservations in Safari.
Furthermore, when typing on the keyboard (again, it does not apply to the Czech language), according to the context and what the given user was previously doing on the device, it suggests locations and names of movies or even the estimated time of arrival. At the same time, Apple emphasizes that none of the information that Siri discovers about the user is available outside of the user's device. Apple uses end-to-end encryption everywhere, and users don't have to sacrifice their privacy for convenience.
Siri has also learned to translate, so far between English, Chinese, Spanish, French, German and Italian.
Do not disturb mode, QuickType keyboard, AirPlay 2, Maps
As mentioned at the beginning of the article, the list of useful little things is long. The Do Not Disturb mode, for example, has a new profile that automatically starts when driving and won't show any notifications unless it's something urgent.
The keyboard simplifies one-handed typing with a special mode that moves all letters to the side closer to the thumb, either to the right or to the left.
AirPlay 2 is a customized control of multiple speakers simultaneously or independently (and is also available for third-party application developers).
Maps are able to display navigation arrows for road lanes and even interior maps in selected locations.
Augmented reality
After a still far from complete list of capabilities and utilities, it is necessary to mention perhaps the biggest novelty of iOS 11 for developers and, as a result, users – ARKit. This is a developer framework of tools for creating augmented reality, in which the real world directly blends with the virtual. During the presentation on the stage, mainly games were mentioned and one from the company Wingnut AR was presented, but augmented reality has great potential in many industries.
iOS 11 availability
A developer trial is available immediately. The public trial version, which can also be used by non-developers, should be released in the second half of June. The official full version will be released as usual in the fall and will be available for iPhone 5S and later, all iPad Air and iPad Pro, iPad 5th generation, iPad mini 2 and later, and iPod touch 6th generation.
CZ Siri? Apple pay in the Czech Republic? A bit awkward, isn't it?
Why? Do you think that we are an essential market for Apple that it cannot do without? :)
When we compare it with Google's support for the Czech language, it's really sad. I would most welcome Czech in Siri and system keyboard prediction.
I don't have a problem with EN siri at all, I use it sometimes. But it would be enough for us if it had Czech data. I think speaking another language on it is the least of the problems.
You are right, but speaking Czech street names in English for navigation or purely Czech surnames in contacts and the like where a person is bound to Czech names is a problem, because Siri simply does not understand them and tries to mash them into English. Try to have her last SMS (in Czech) read, it's really fun. It's just silly to speak English well with it, but I think it's simply impossible to use it realistically without localization. Likewise their keyboard, it's just a shame, I think it's better and faster than swiftkey, but unfortunately without localization and Czech predictions :-/ If they did this for us, it would be a bomb.
I understand that, as I mostly use her to dial contacts and it works there, I have learned "Chenglish" names, how to say them, so she knows :D But the other thing is that she understands text message dictation, for example - so theoretically, she could speak English and understand Czech :D But it's true that I don't drive a car, so I won't really use it for voice control. Rather, it's only at home that you turn on the lights, make a call, turn on the alarm clock.
You can assign regular contacts their status in your life. For example, I use (call my wife, call my boss, call my brother..etc). Siri first asks you who your wife is, and then it works flawlessly. Sometimes I deliberately enter a typical Czech name with "ř, or ů" and it often works out. Or I use Siri to help me get from a foreign city to the "go home" highway. He wants to find out how to use it and then it becomes a useful helper even without the support of Czech and Slovak.
Hello,
I didn't notice if it was mentioned somewhere, but will the changes in iOS apply to all ipads or will the functions of files, improved dock, drag & drop,... be available only for iPad Pro?
For all 64bit iPads
Thank you. :)
What is that green icon next to flight mode?
Data
And SIRI in Czech again nothing? Why doesn't it surprise me anymore?
Disappointment. iOS11 basically brings nothing, at least for Czech users without AppleMusic.
Ha, never mind. And have you seen it yet? Tons of useful stuff after a long time. Of course, I don't just take things for iPhone, but the entire iOS11 for iPads as well. There is nothing missing in the phone, and news will come more with new phones.
Of course CZ Siri is disappointing.
I'm not talking about HW, but OS. iOS11 doesn't really bring anything interesting / major that I would appreciate. It has a few improvements that are not worth mentioning, from my user point of view, I will just have to get used to the new notification center again and I won't have a special app to control Apple TV, I didn't notice anything else important.
You write about tons of useful things, so please at least 20 examples. Thank you in advance.
You could definitely find 20 of them, but I will list a few important ones.
Significantly improved multitasking, file system drag/drop, AR, Metal2. And a ton of smaller ones :)
Multitasking has not changed for iPhones and iPads without 64 processors
File system the same, only for iPad 64x
AR is useless
Metal2 is also useless for ordinary users
So please at least another 15, let's get to 5, if you don't even give 20 tons anymore.
For me, changing the file type of videos and photos, I assume that the file system meant the files application ("files are also on the iPhone"), in the context of what you describe here that everything is only for 64x, so it's not a coincidence because Apple abandons 32x processors.. , then QR in the photo with the possibility of connecting to applications, a new super keyboard for iPads, printscreens bring a wonderful new function of prime edit + sharing, file scanning and signatures in notes, editing of live photos, a new faster appstore, control center, finally, sliders, and so much more new kits for developers (machine learning or depth map api are worth mentioning)
I'm writing from the point of view of a regular user (see what you're responding to) and I'm not really interested in developer options there. I'm also not interested in a clearer appstore, because I don't look for new applications in the Appstore. QR in the camera is nice, even if it is X years behind the competition, yes, I will probably save one app here, if it will work correctly, the same for editing screenshots. The file was presented really only for iPads. Otherwise, just nonsense about nothing, see ControlCenter, still X years behind the competition without the possibility of personification.
You know, the development possibilities are not for you, but the applications that developers use to make are for you (wink). ) .. And don't worry, the Files application is also on the iPhone..
In terms of usability and the meaningfulness of using these functions, Apple seems to me to be far ahead of the competition. (but that's purely a matter of opinion)
so we're back to the conclusion that there won't be tons of improvements for the user, just a little tweaking of the competition, so that's just reality
:D ha ha Android-type stupidity of the changes got your attention. That says it all. You really don't need a phone like that. Something up to 5 will suffice, more is meaningless for you.
Don't push me something I didn't say. Don't dictate what I should buy and what I shouldn't. I'm not going to sell all the Apple products I own to satisfy your dictatorial comradeship because of you.
That was just a recommendation based on your arguments. Pushing and dictating look different. Even here you are not strong in the cramples. Apple picker as it should be :)
As I write, I don't feed trolls without arguments.
And don't you really understand that, for example, Metal2 and ARkit appear to be a "developer's option" at first glance, but their outputs can already affect the "ordinary user" in a very fundamental way?
Otherwise, iOS11 is really a major benefit for the iPad (even the classic one, but it's even more pronounced for the Pro), there the shift will really be out of the question. If up until now the talk about replacing the laptop was rather from the category of bullshit, now it is gradually approaching the point where it will already be a serious topic for discussion.
For the iPhone, it's more about minor improvements like Control Center, etc., it's really not a breakthrough.
The programming tool is about as valuable to the average user as the additional 2 speeds of a new bus.
I'm also not talking about the iPhone, which doesn't even need much, I'm talking about iOS11, if you can read? And if you take the named as insignificant, then you are an ordinary ignoramus who doesn't even understand it and buys Apple only because of the logo. Just a shameful iOvce with whom there is no point in further debate. If you want more news, hopefully you will also get new smileys. I suspect there will be a ton of them.
Sir, I have been involved in IT since 1987, you may not even have been here, and believe me, I buy things based on their functionality, benefits, etc. competition. No Think Different, just CopyByCupertino. You act like an irritated iOvce without arguments.
Sir, I was in the world a long time ago and I don't care at all if it's apples or pears. You claim here that Apple does not bring anything new, and I claim that in that case you do not understand it. If it was about the events of previous years, I would agree with you, but now it is pure nonsense. If only because you're not dealing with iOS as a whole.
Arguments, you lack arguments. I don't feed trolls. I also deal with the OS as a regular user, not a programmer, see my introductory post. I really don't consider the redesign of the AppStore as a breakthrough innovation, everything else is just copying the competition, that's the reality. And for iPads, we currently have 3 at home, all as content displays and game consoles for the kids. It is not very easy to work with them, I tried that for a few years.
I've already given the arguments, I can't blame you for your blindness. A WWDC video is also available. If you have them as displays, it is again confirmed that you are only buying a brand, but you don't really know what to do with it. I'm not responsible for that either. It can be seen that you buy the device based on functionality and benefit :D So I'm not surprised that some are talking about iOvc
Are you really that stupid?
Yes, it does not currently bring anything new. What represents only the improvement of the existing one and catching up with what the competition has had for a long time.
I wouldn't say that yet. When they introduced iOS 11, there were only a few new features. But with the introduction of the new iPad, they showed a number of others. It is likely that they will save some of the new features for the introduction of the new iPhone ;-)
It looks like an x64 chip limitation, so it won't affect everyone. I'm only expecting DarkMode-type trifles. Otherwise, the transfer from the old iPhone to the new AppleWatch is interesting, yes.
Don't get too excited about AR only for A9 chips and above ;)
So this is probably the last iOS version for my 5S.
For me - App Store - total crap... why not dig up something that looked and worked well until now, now it's a messy mess... new control center - they obviously tried to go the "no good old Steve Jobs design" route overall it seems uneven to me and the whole thing is strangely jumbled up…. after about 2 hours of use, I immediately downgraded back...
I don't know if someone mentioned it already, but after the upg. on 11, I can send normal SMS from a mac. It works great as if it were iMess. Of course, it's a paid SMS, but it's convenient! FINALLY
This has been going on for about three thousand years
Yeah? Yes, I bought the app at the end of last year because it was not possible to send normal SMS from the Mac via the "Messages" app, which sent the text of the message to the mobile phone and I had to confirm it there. It definitely won't last 3000 years, but maybe it works before the new iOS was released :)
