Last night, Instagram introduced a brand new platform aimed at the biggest possible competition. It's called IGTV and the company accompanies it with the slogan "The next generation of video". Given its focus, it will go head-to-head against YouTube and, to some extent, Snapchat.

You can read the official press release here. In short, it is a brand new platform that focuses on sharing rated video content. This will allow users to connect even more with those they follow on Instagram. Individual profiles, on the other hand, get another tool that can help them increase their reach and everything that goes with it. The new service is tailored to mobile phones for several reasons.

The first is that by default all videos will be played (and also recorded) vertically, i.e. portrait. The playback will start automatically the moment you start the application and the controls will be similar to those you are used to from the classic Instagram application. The application is built for shooting and playing really long videos.

The whole system will work based on the rating of videos and individual accounts. Everyone can share videos, but only the most successful ones will get more publicity. The press release says that IGTV will be the future of video on the mobile platform. Considering the huge membership base of this social network, it will be interesting to see in which direction the novelty will develop. The company's goals are certainly not small. Amateur video content is said to be extremely popular, and the company expects video playback to account for 80% of total data traffic over the next three years. The new application has been available in the App Store since yesterday.
