The Apple Watch was introduced in 2015 and although it contained, like the following generations in the basic series, a relatively durable aluminum body, it was certainly not durable. Water resistance was brought up to Series 2, dust resistance even up to the current Series 7. However, we may see a truly robust Apple smartwatch soon.

Series 0 and Series 1

The first generation Apple Watch, which was also colloquially referred to as Series 0, only provided splash resistance. They corresponded to the IPX7 waterproof specification according to the IEC 60529 standard. Accordingly, they were resistant to spills and water, but Apple did not recommend submerging them under water. The important thing was that some hand washing did them no harm. The second generation of watches that Apple introduced was a duo of models. However, Series 1 differed from Series 2 precisely in water resistance. Series 1 thus copied the characteristics of the first generation, so that their (lousy) durability was also preserved.

Water resistance and Series 2 to Series 7

The Series 2 came with 50 m water resistance. Apple has not improved this in any way since then, so it is applicable for all other models (including SE). It means that these generations are waterproof to a depth of 50 meters according to ISO 22810:2010. They can be used at the surface, for example when swimming in a pool or in the sea. However, they should not be used for scuba diving, water skiing and other activities where they come into contact with fast-moving water. The important thing is that they don't mind showering.

Even so, they should not come into contact with soap, shampoos, conditioners, cosmetics and perfumes, as these could have an adverse effect on the seals and acoustic membranes. It should also be noted that the Apple Watch is water-resistant, but not waterproof. The problem may be that the water resistance is not a permanent state and can decrease over time, it cannot be checked and the watch cannot be resealed in any way - therefore, you cannot complain about liquid ingress.

Interestingly, when you start a swim workout, Apple Watch will automatically lock the screen using Water Lock to prevent accidental taps. When you're done, just turn the crown to unlock the display and start draining all the water from your Apple Watch. You can hear sounds and feel the water on your wrist. You should also practice this procedure after any contact with water. You can also do so through the Control Center, where you click on Lock in water and then turn the crown.

Series 7 and dust resistance

The Apple Watch Series 7 is the company's most durable watch to date. In addition to 50m water resistance, they also provide IP6X dust resistance. It simply means that this degree of protection provides it against penetration by any means and against the complete penetration of foreign objects, typically dust. At the same time, the lower IP5X level allows partial penetration of dust. However, any of these lower levels are practically worthless, as we simply do not know how it was with previous series.

Nevertheless, the Series 7 also provide the glass with the highest resistance against cracking. It is up to 50% thicker than the front glass of the Apple Watch Series 6, making it stronger and more durable. The flat underside then increases its strength against cracking. Even if the Series 7 didn't bring that much, increasing the body and improving the durability is actually what many have been calling for.

And Apple certainly doesn't stop there. If he has nowhere to go with the basic series, he is quite possibly planning a durable model that will bring not only new materials but also other options that will be used especially by athletes. We should wait until next year. Perhaps work will also be done on waterproofing, and we will be able to use the Apple Watch during deep diving as well. This could also open the door to other applications that could help divers in the sport.
