Even though Apple is the second largest smartphone seller in the world behind Samsung, the competition in the field of operating system is simply huge. Only he has his iOS, while the rest are overwhelmingly Android. So it's no wonder that more apps are downloaded on Android, but the number of installs on iOS is growing faster.

The company Sensor Tower conducted an analysis of content downloads from the App Store and Google Play application stores for the first quarter of this year. The results are that users have installed 36,9 billion titles on their Android devices, compared to 8,6 billion on iOS. Android therefore has a strong lead, but the number of downloads is growing more slowly. It was 1,4% year-on-year, while Apple's was 2,4%.

Put in a broader context, this means that Apple users are installing more apps. This is also due to the fact that iPhones are high-end phones that many want to expand their capabilities, while many Android devices fall into the low-end section and serve as phones for many without the need to install anything. But it is true that the highest number of downloads in Google Play comes from India and Brazil. On iOS, the most content is downloaded in the US.

Download trends

The world is ruled by social networks and communication platforms. If we add up the number of downloads in both stores, it beats them all TikTok, followed by the titles of the company Meta - Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, the fifth place belongs to Telegram. In the ranking we also find other social networks, such as Snapchat, Twitter or Pinterest, communication platforms such as Messenger and Zoom, but also shopping applications such as Shopee, Amazon or SHEIN. There are also streaming platforms Spotify, Netflix and YouTube.

Meta managed to overtake Google as the largest publisher. The third is the Chinese company behind TikTok, ByteDance. Of the categories, games are clearly the most downloaded, on both platforms. In the App Store, however, interest in photography applications is falling slightly, falling by 12,3%.

Things

Due to the Russia-Ukraine crisis, the GasBuddy application, which provides information on fuel prices, has recorded a record number of downloads. Interest in this segment of applications grew by up to 1% at one time. Interest in the never-ending phenomenon called Wordle also grew, by 570%. Due to the small percentage of other operating systems, the report focuses only on the App Store and Google Play. It also doesn't include stores like Samsung's Galaxy Store or Amazon's growing digital store distribution. These are available on the Android platform, as it is known, Apple does not let anyone into its iOS.
