Devices with flexible displays are currently booming. It is not only Samsung that has already released the 5th generation of Fold and Flip models, others are also trying, and not just Chinese manufacturers. Even Google is already selling its model. Now more news has leaked out that we might indeed see an Apple solution one day, albeit a slightly different one.

We already have quite a lot of foldable phones. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold was the first one to spread worldwide. Now many are also betting on clamshell solutions, when Motorola, for example, presented quite impressive models that also score points with their more pleasant price. But in its first attempt at a puzzle, Apple will reportedly not start with a smartphone, but with a tablet, not an iPhone, but an iPad.

The "Apple Fold" designation keeps popping up quite often in various rumors, and DigiTimes reports that Apple has indeed been working on its own foldable smartphone for a year now. But somewhat paradoxically, it should be overtaken by the foldable iPad. The report does not provide details, but once again it confirms what has been rumored for a long time. Moreover, it could happen quite soon.

The tablet segment needs a revival

Even though iPads are the tablet market leader, they are not doing well. Sales keep falling and it may be because we keep seeing the same thing here. It's actually not as pressing a problem with smartphones as it is with tablets that haven't changed in years - that is, if you don't count the extreme diagonals like the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra and now the S9 Ultra. After all, with its recently introduced Galaxy Tab S8 series, Samsung clearly shows that adding performance is simply not enough. After a year and a half, the entire trio of his tablets is actually without any major innovation compared to its previous generation.

This is why Apple can try to revive the stagnant market a little. Already in October of last year, we had rumors here (source is CCS Insight) that the foldable iPad would arrive in 2024. But we had 2022, when this year now looks much more optimistic. In a certain respect, this was also confirmed by Samsung, i.e. Apple's main display supplier, right back in November. It was missed that Apple will supply flexible displays, but they will not be intended for iPhones. Already in January of this year, Ming-Chi Kuo also stated that the foldable iPad will arrive in 2024.

iPad or MacBook?

Only Bloomberg's Mark Gurman is somewhat skeptical of this term and has not fully confirmed it. Ross Young, on the other hand, thinks that the foldable device should be a 20,5" MacBook, which Apple will introduce in 2025. It is exactly this statement that Gurman is positive about.

For any foldable iPad to exist, Apple must work closely with suppliers to create the display. Unlike the regular iPad display, the foldable version cannot be manufactured using traditional methods and requires a lot of development and collaboration, so we can expect significantly more nutritious leaks, but there are none yet. The current presentation of some Apple puzzle is therefore very unlikely.

So Apple clearly does not want to enter the sub-segment of folding phones, where the space is filling up and he would be just another one of many. That's why he wants to try it first where no one has tried before - with tablets and laptops. But it can easily burn out, because these segments are not growing, while iPhones are still on the horse and there is constant interest in them.
