This is also why the embassy staff found themselves faced with huge odds, practically without much protection, which a stay in the "exploding" region would otherwise certainly deserve. They wouldn't have the slightest chance if it weren't for a group of "security analysts", former elite marines, operating in the area. They throw aside all written and unwritten procedures, especially the order not to interfere in anything, and decide to defend the embassy to the last drop of blood. The time frame in the film refers to the time during which the unequal battle for the embassy was fought.
