When we look at the new iPhones 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, they have brought some pretty significant changes in terms of their design. Steel was replaced by titanium, the Lightning port was replaced by the USB-C standard, and the volume rocker was replaced by the Action button. If we focus on the last mentioned element, how do I look at it after two months of use?

Everyone has different needs, and just as they use different applications, they may find it useful to map different options to the Action button. Someone will stay with the volume switch because they are simply too used to it, someone will use the option to give the button the function of activating the Camera, starting the selected focus mode, or shortcuts for Photos, Clock, Music, Notes, Phone, etc. But the new iPhones have been with us for some time that time, so you can have fun talking about whether the button has a long-term use.

Enthusiasm gave way to sobriety

Since I didn't really use the volume rocker, I took the Action button with thanks. I always have my phone on silent because my smartwatch informs me of everything, so I don't need my iPhone to ring any more. The novelty of getting rid of an unnecessary element by replacing it with something more useful was therefore really welcome in my case.

Setting up a button to launch the Camera app was a fairly obvious choice, despite the fact that you'll find it on the lock screen, Control Center, and of course as an icon somewhere on your desktop. It was great at first, but that was because I was testing the capabilities of the new phone, so I was taking dozens of photos every day, which the quick button activation really came in handy. Some time later, however, everything is different.

What bothers me?

This text comes about because I found myself over the weekend actually ignoring the button. Even on trips, when I usually take a lot of photos, I simply didn't use it. I have always activated the camera from the lock screen without using the button option, so I then asked why? The answer is that a person has been taught something so much over the years that it is rather difficult to retrain him for this.

But the fact that the button is like that, is the way it is and is where it actually is, is also to blame. It is very high on the iPhone 15 Pro Max model and it is not always completely comfortable to press it. It is not uncommon for me to hold the volume button instead. So the Action button does, but it would like something a little different. Of course, Apple won't listen to me, but I can wish for it, right? Firstly, I would like to make the button itself larger, secondly, I would like to move it, well below the power button.

Second chance

Apple certainly meant well, and it's still true that this solution is better in my eyes than the switch itself, but I'm so worried if it has a long-term future. Even Android tried with a similar button and failed. But instead of it, there needs to be an option to press the shutdown button twice and call up the camera, etc.

In conclusion, one recommendation: If you want to actively use the Action button, give it a unique function that you haven't used so intuitively before. It doesn't make much sense with the Camera, unless you choose to activate a certain function directly for it, which is what I'm trying now, specifically in the case of capturing a Portrait. So we'll see.
