The previous generations of the Pro and Pro Max iPhones differed only minimally. Basically, they focused only on the size itself, i.e. the size of the display and thus the device, when a larger battery could fit into the larger model. That's where it started and ended. This year it's different and I don't have a choice anymore. If Apple doesn't give 5x zoom to the smaller model, I'm doomed to get the Max version.

This year's situation is definitely not the first time that Apple differentiates between a larger and a smaller model. When the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus arrived, the larger model offered optical image stabilization for its main camera. In addition, it was introduced to the smaller model two years later, i.e. in the iPhone 7. In contrast, the iPhone 7 Plus received a telephoto lens, which was never seen in the smaller model, not even in the case of subsequent iPhone SEs.

The larger body of the iPhone gives Apple more room to fit it with more modern and advanced technology. Or not, because he simply wants to get more out of a larger and therefore more expensive model. In this case, of course, we mean more profits, because such differences, although perhaps small, can persuade many customers to pay more for a larger and more equipped model. This year, the company succeeded in my case as well.

Will the smaller model also get 5x zoom?

Did I want the iPhone 15 Pro Max? No way, I thought I'd last another year. Finally, I was so curious about the 5x telephoto lens that I couldn't resist. I'm used to big phones, so personally I would buy the Max version anyway in the future. But by the fact that Apple exclusively favors the larger model with its tetraprism telephoto lens, is it condemning me to not return to more compact sizes?

Analysts and leakers are still not completely clear about whether the 5x zoom will also be used in the smaller iPhone 16 Pro model. It depends on whether Apple finds a place for it in the device and whether it actually wants to put it there. The current strategy of slightly differentiating the portfolio may be more interesting for the customer. Not everyone needs such a zoom and will prefer the standard, i.e. 3x zoom, regardless of the fact that they will pay less money for a smaller device.

In the final it may not matter

Of course, it could have turned out differently and Apple could have burned itself on its new Max model. But taking pictures at such a close-up is clearly fun even after the iPhone 15 Pro Max has been on the market. I take pictures with him all the time and everything and I definitely don't want to go back. So if Apple keeps the 5x zoom only in larger models, it has a permanent customer in me.

An undemanding customer who wants a Pro model may not really care and will only decide based on the size and price alone. Even DXOMark ranks both phone models at the same level, whether it has 5x or 3x zoom.
