In today's guide, we will show you how to downgrade your iPhone 3G from iOS 4 to iOS 3.1.3, which will be especially appreciated by those users who can no longer watch their iPhone 3G slowly become an unusable phone. It's true that the iPhone 3G doesn't get along very well with iOS 4 - apps take an annoyingly long time to launch and often crash during loading. Meanwhile, iOS 4 should be the fastest iOS ever.

For iPhone 3G owners, it doesn't bring so many new things (folders, local notifications, improved e-mail accounts), so the downgrade won't "hurt" them so much. Unfortunately, new app updates associated with iOS 4 are released every day, and some of them are no longer compatible with previous iOS at all. Therefore, if you decide to downgrade to a lower version of iOS, some of your favorite and used applications may not work at all, and expect that you will of course lose iBooks. If you still decide to downgrade, here are instructions on how to do it.

We will need:

Approach:

1. Check your backups

  • If you don't want to lose all your data, check your older backups. iOS 4 was released on June 21, so all backups up to that date are for lower iOS versions.
  • Unfortunately, iTunes doesn't keep more than 1 backup for a given device, so if you upgraded your iPhone 3G to iOS4 and then synced it, you probably won't have a backup with iOS 3.1.3. Backups can be found in the folder: library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup.

2. Data storage

  • Save all the photos you take, otherwise you may lose them forever. If you cannot restore the data from the backup, you will have to set the iPhone as "set up as a new phone", which means that you will not have any data on it. Therefore, I recommend that you synchronize all notes or send them by email, also take screenshots of the desktop so that you know how you had the icons arranged.

    3. Make “transfer purchases” of your device in iTunes

    • If you buy music or apps directly on your iPhone, make “transfer purchases” in iTunes to get those purchases to your computer.

    4. Download RecBoot and iOS 3.1.3 firmware image

    • As mentioned above, you will need the freely available RecBoot application and the iPhone 3G iOS 3.1.3 firmware image to perform the downgrade. RecBoot requires Intel Mac version 10.5 or higher.

    5. DFU mode

    • Perform DFU mode:
      • Connect your iPhone to your computer and launch iTunes.
      • Turn off your iPhone.
      • Hold the Power button and the Home button at the same time for 10 seconds.
      • Then release the Power button and continue to hold the Home button for another 10 seconds. (Power button – is the button for putting the iPhone to sleep, Home button – is the bottom round button).
    • If you want a visual demonstration of how to get into DFU mode, here is the video.
    • After successful execution of DFU mode, a notification will appear in iTunes that the program has detected an iPhone in recovery mode, click OK and continue with the instructions.

    6. Restore

    • Hold Alt and click Restore in iTunes, then select the downloaded iPhone 3G iOS 3.1.3 firmware image.
    • The restore will start and after some time you will get an error. Please do not click on this error (at least not for now). Next, “Connect to iTunes” will appear on the iPhone, ignore that as well.

    7. RecBoot

    • After seeing the already mentioned error, which you still do not click, open the RecBoot folder, where you will see three files - ReadMe, RecBoot and RecBoot Exit Only. Run the last mentioned RecBoot Exit Only. RecBoot will show you an Exit Recovery Mode button after launch.
    • Click this button, then the “Connect to iTunes” message will finally disappear on your iPhone.
    • Now you can unclick the already mentioned error in iTunes.

    8. Settings

    • Now iTunes will ask you that there is a newer version of iOS for your phone, answer it with the Cancel button. Then set the iPhone either as “set up as a new phone” or restore from a backup (if you have one available). However, you probably won't have any backup, so the choice is clear.
    • If you do not want iTunes to inform you that a new version of iOS has been released and whether you want to install it, just check "Don't ask me again" before clicking the Cancel button.

Now all you have to do is fill your iPhone with applications, music, contacts, photos, etc.
