In today's guide, we will show you how to downgrade your iPhone 3G from iOS 4 to iOS 3.1.3, which will be especially appreciated by those users who can no longer watch their iPhone 3G slowly become an unusable phone. It's true that the iPhone 3G doesn't get along very well with iOS 4 - apps take an annoyingly long time to launch and often crash during loading. Meanwhile, iOS 4 should be the fastest iOS ever.
For iPhone 3G owners, it doesn't bring so many new things (folders, local notifications, improved e-mail accounts), so the downgrade won't "hurt" them so much. Unfortunately, new app updates associated with iOS 4 are released every day, and some of them are no longer compatible with previous iOS at all. Therefore, if you decide to downgrade to a lower version of iOS, some of your favorite and used applications may not work at all, and expect that you will of course lose iBooks. If you still decide to downgrade, here are instructions on how to do it.
We will need:
- iPhone 3G.
- iTunes.
- RecBoot application (freely available, e.g. from www.sebby.net/443-recboot-final-release/)
- iPhone iOS 3.1.3 firmware image (eg z http://www.hackint0sh.org/f127/22056.htm)
Approach:
1. Check your backups
- If you don't want to lose all your data, check your older backups. iOS 4 was released on June 21, so all backups up to that date are for lower iOS versions.
- Unfortunately, iTunes doesn't keep more than 1 backup for a given device, so if you upgraded your iPhone 3G to iOS4 and then synced it, you probably won't have a backup with iOS 3.1.3. Backups can be found in the folder: library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup.
2. Data storage
- Save all the photos you take, otherwise you may lose them forever. If you cannot restore the data from the backup, you will have to set the iPhone as "set up as a new phone", which means that you will not have any data on it. Therefore, I recommend that you synchronize all notes or send them by email, also take screenshots of the desktop so that you know how you had the icons arranged.
3. Make “transfer purchases” of your device in iTunes
- If you buy music or apps directly on your iPhone, make “transfer purchases” in iTunes to get those purchases to your computer.
4. Download RecBoot and iOS 3.1.3 firmware image
- As mentioned above, you will need the freely available RecBoot application and the iPhone 3G iOS 3.1.3 firmware image to perform the downgrade. RecBoot requires Intel Mac version 10.5 or higher.
5. DFU mode
- Perform DFU mode:
- Connect your iPhone to your computer and launch iTunes.
- Turn off your iPhone.
- Hold the Power button and the Home button at the same time for 10 seconds.
- Then release the Power button and continue to hold the Home button for another 10 seconds. (Power button – is the button for putting the iPhone to sleep, Home button – is the bottom round button).
- If you want a visual demonstration of how to get into DFU mode, here is the video.
- After successful execution of DFU mode, a notification will appear in iTunes that the program has detected an iPhone in recovery mode, click OK and continue with the instructions.
6. Restore
- Hold Alt and click Restore in iTunes, then select the downloaded iPhone 3G iOS 3.1.3 firmware image.
- The restore will start and after some time you will get an error. Please do not click on this error (at least not for now). Next, “Connect to iTunes” will appear on the iPhone, ignore that as well.
7. RecBoot
- After seeing the already mentioned error, which you still do not click, open the RecBoot folder, where you will see three files - ReadMe, RecBoot and RecBoot Exit Only. Run the last mentioned RecBoot Exit Only. RecBoot will show you an Exit Recovery Mode button after launch.
- Click this button, then the “Connect to iTunes” message will finally disappear on your iPhone.
- Now you can unclick the already mentioned error in iTunes.
8. Settings
- Now iTunes will ask you that there is a newer version of iOS for your phone, answer it with the Cancel button. Then set the iPhone either as “set up as a new phone” or restore from a backup (if you have one available). However, you probably won't have any backup, so the choice is clear.
- If you do not want iTunes to inform you that a new version of iOS has been released and whether you want to install it, just check "Don't ask me again" before clicking the Cancel button.
Now all you have to do is fill your iPhone with applications, music, contacts, photos, etc.

Is this guide only for 3G or will it also work for 3GS?
Primarily for 3G, not tested on 3GS, you can try it, maybe it will work.
I have no idea how the shsh blob works, but I understood that since January Apple no longer signs old versions of fw on 3gs and above, and I know that perhaps the software has started to do this with 3g as well. Someone please correct me.
I really don't know, this guide was written primarily as a 3G guide. It was like this on the mentioned source as well. But I haven't tried it with the 3GS, so who knows.
Peter, it's fine, I'm just saying that it might not be that simple, with the possibility that someone will fix it for me :)
Yesterday, I Jailbreak, turned on multitasking, and paradoxically, launching all applications is faster. Even switching between them.
Hi Vlad, although it is a nice article, it would not be appropriate to put (Mac) in brackets at the end of the title...
I personally know about 15 people with jaTelefon and not one of them has a mac, they all talk about widlich... I'm not saying that they will kill me in 3 minutes, but I think that it would not only make me happy... unfortunately there are those who have GPRS at work and are bored at the same time and wait 5 minutes for that heap picture... 5% of battery is shit...
And one small question, is the content of Twitter identical to the content of FB?
to Adam: All articles go to Twitter automatically. We only select some on FB..
Instructions for downgrading under Windows with a video tutorial can be found on my blog, specifically http://goo.gl/Ld6D. It's a tutorial written specifically for Win 7 x64, because it's a bit more complicated there. Under the remaining versions, it is much easier, see the discussion below the article.
I hope you won't be angry that I warmed up my spit :) I hope it helps someone.
Adam: Expect instructions for Windows on the server called Jablickari... well, I don't see, I don't see :-)
I don't see any problem, because the RecBoot application is for both Mac and Windows and this application is key in the instructions. Otherwise, Windows can also download the iOS 3.1.3 firmware image, as well as drag and drop photos from the iPhone or transfer purchases in iTunes. This guide is for both operating systems.
Hello everyone,
do you know if, according to this guide, I can downgrade to the fastest iOS for iPhone, namely – 2.2.1??
2.2.1 is the fastest iOS for 3G?
I only know 3.xx so I didn't have that path.
So I finally downgraded my iPhone to 3.1.3. Everything went fine, but now one app is not compatible with this version. It's a 1 Password app. Is there any way to update it to version 3.1.3. get. Thanks a lot for the reply.
Well, the only way to get to older backups or applications is probably TimeMachine. Who doesn't use it... I'm sorry :-)
Otherwise, DWNGD went well. Beautiful 3.1.3 already bro. Now I can finally sell iPlacek with a clear conscience. It will fly like a storm :-) and with a two-year warranty.
Thanks for the advice, I didn't think of finding that app in the backup. :-)
So now I'm satisfied. Thanks.
That's why Apple is dangerous. The simple things work and the complex ones attack the person :-)
You can upload a crappy backup to the iP at any time, regardless of which FW it is from .. after switching from 3G to 3GS, I couldn't upload the old backup from 3G with 3.1.3 to the new 3GS with iOS 4. I set up as new iP and then it's enough in iTunes, under Devices, right-click on the iP and select restore from backup... Select the desired date and confirm
Hello guys, I don't know anything about it, I want to buy an iphone 3G and I want it to be fast and I don't know what axis should I put there?
it's not very fast, better buy a 3gs
good day, someone please send me a link where I can download RecBoot, I found one on uloz.to but it doesn't respond when I enter exit recovery mode and it's a different version, it looks different than the picture, thanks
Hello, I don't know why, but when I downgrade my iPhone, when I get to press the restore button while holding down "alt", it always offers me to upgrade to a newer version... So the downgrade doesn't happen... I can't get to the point where I can select a folder with a lower version 3.1.3. Can someone please give me some advice? Thanks for your reply. Thomas
Hello, I downgraded my iP 3g from iOS 4.2.1 to iOS 3.1.3 according to the instructions and everything works. Now I would like to go back to iOS 4.2.1, but I can't at all. I tried the same procedure as the downgrade. It always gives me the error 1604 and then not even a tap. Can anyone advise how to get back? Thanks. Mirek
if you can't hold ALT.. press SHIFT :) otherwise thanks for the tutorial :)
