What determines the value of a product? Is it really its price, utility value, brand? Of course, we do not see Apple's exact production costs and margins, but many people wonder how it is possible that such a large device as the M2 MacBook Air can cost the same money as the small iPhone 14 Pro Max.

The manufacturer can make whatever excuses he wants, why he makes new products more expensive. It is not an exception that due to various factors, even old products become more expensive. It is therefore quite a shock when, on the contrary, it becomes cheaper. It seems like they set their price based on how popular the product is and work with how much they can make on it. By the way, we are of course also talking about the latest Mac mini.

iPhone 14 Pro Max or two Mac minis?

It's definitely a good thing that Apple has priced the new M2 Mac mini a touch lower than the previous generation. The Mac mini (M1, 2020) cost CZK 21 in its basic configuration, while the new model will cost you CZK 990 with an updated chip. Saving 17 CZK and having higher performance is definitely nice. But why did Apple do this? Of course, the Mac mini is on the fringes of its portfolio, and the company isn't making huge amounts of money from it. This is an entry-level computer into the world of macOS that has the potential to attract new iPhone owners as well.

But if we calculate a little, it is quite surprising that the iPhone 14 Pro Max costs more than two current M2 Mac minis. It is surprising that the M2 MacBook Air costs CZK 36 and the iPhone 990 Pro Max costs exactly the same. So it all looks like Apple's pricing policy isn't, or at least doesn't seem to be, about any technical specifications of the product as much as its popularity. Apple knows that even if they make iPhones more expensive, people will keep buying them. But if they make Macs more expensive, they may not achieve the same goal at all.

The price is determined not only by the price of components + the required margin, but also by development costs. But why is the iPhone 14 series so expensive? It remained the same in the USA, but on the European continent, for example, it became more expensive. There was talk about the geopolitical situation, the strong dollar, but less so about the fact that Apple poured an incredible amount of money into satellite SOS communication, which of course they have to get back somehow. But why should the home user suffer when the rest of the world can suffer, who won't even enjoy this feature in their homeland anyway?

In addition, the iPhone 14 still has the same design with the same dimensions and form factor, so it's just a matter of figuring out the internal layout, there's not much to develop here. In contrast, the M2 MacBook brought an updated chassis with a new chip. Of course Apple knows why it does what it does and the customer just puts their head down and buys anyway.
