What is the future of office work? Each of us is taught a certain style of how we operate our computers, how we use their system interfaces and how we look at displays, i.e. displays. Two major manufacturers have now presented their solutions for smart displays, each of which is different, original in its own way and with a big question mark as to whether it will catch on in the market. We are talking about Apple Studio Display and Samsung Smart Monitor M8.

Along with the Mac Studio, Apple also introduced the 27" Studio Display, priced from CZK 42. When you already have a sufficiently powerful workstation, it's nice that you can also purchase a quality brand display for it. Samsung only has its own laptops, which it does not officially sell in the Czech Republic. But it has a wide portfolio of high-end televisions, which is why an external display makes sense for it as well.

A13 Bionic vs Tizen

Most of us rely on the hardware of our computers and view displays as only what displays content from them. The Studio Display, however, contains the A13 Bionic chip, which lends the display various functions. Its camera is able to center the shot, six speakers and surround sound are also present. While these features are certainly clever, they're a poor relative compared to Samsung's solution.

The 32" Smart Monitor M8 contains a Tizen chip and the display as a whole tries to combine not only an external display but also a smart TV. Let's ignore the fact that it is too similar to the 24" iMac, but let's focus on the main thing - the features. It offers integration of streaming services, including Netflix or Apple TV+. Just have it connected to Wi-Fi. Using Smart Hub technology, it can then connect to many other smart (IoT) devices.

However, you can use this display without a computer. You can browse the web, edit documents and work on projects on it. Thanks to the Workspace user interface, windows from different devices and services can be displayed on the monitor simultaneously. A computer with Windows or macOS can be connected to the monitor wirelessly as well as display the contents of a smartphone, whether using Samsung DeX or Apple Airplay 2.0. Last but not least, the monitor also offers Microsoft 365 for editing documents only on the monitor without a connected PC.

Two worlds in one

Even though Samsung introduced its smart displays back in 2020, this is clearly the future of where external displays are headed. Consider that you have a MacBook that you don't even need to connect to the display with a cable. That even if the MacBook is out of order, you can only do basic work on the display. And you watch your favorite series in your spare time.

But do we want to merge two worlds into one? On the one hand, it's great that one device at a price of 20 CZK can replace a display, a television and serve as the center of a smart home, but do we want to merge the work world with the personal one in this way? It's actually as if Apple added certain Apple TV features to its Studio Display.

Personally, I perhaps naively hoped that Apple could present a display in the price range of around 20 thousand CZK as part of its Peek Performance event, which of course I did not see. But Samsung with its Smart Monitor M8 completely exceeded my expectations, and thanks to the exemplary connection with the world of Apple, I am quite eager to at least try it. Although I don't give it much of a chance for mass success (after all, you can get a lot of other displays for 20 CZK), I like this solution and it could indicate a certain trend.
