A dubious speculation claims that Apple is working on a Nintendo Switch-like console. It is questionable because it comes from an unknown source (a Korean forum) and because it is unsubstantiated. Let's forget whether this is fact or fiction and instead look at why Apple should make its console and what it would bring to gamers. Although Apple has always offered games on its devices, the company as such has never dabbled in the gaming industry, or at least not very successfully (see Pippin). All in all, it published only two games in its App Store. It is once Texas Hold'em, which you can find in it even now, the second was the pun Warren Buffett's Paper Wizard. It was dedicated to this biggest Apple investor, who had just started his working career as a newspaper delivery man. However, once it served its purpose, Apple removed it from the App Store.

Why yes

Apple took a bigger "gaming" step only with the launch of the Apple Arcade platform in 2019. However, after the disappointment of the functions of the new Apple TV 4K, it seems that it will not make it a gaming console anymore. We did not get our own game controller, the redesigned Siri Remote is also not suitable for games, also due to the absence of an accelerometer and gyroscope. A portable game console could have potential, but wouldn't it fit in with the iPhone?

Take the iPod touch, which is presented as a certain gaming console. Apple would actually just need to update it and possibly add some of those hardware controllers, like the Nintendo Switch has right now (using a smart connector?). You'd play on the "iPod" on the go, at home by connecting to the Apple TV on it, which is how the whole Apple Arcade platform was intended anyway. Even so, everything is developing more towards Apple actually getting rid of this idea.

Why not

It could be said that Apple already has everything it needs to provide its users with a great gaming experience without a new type of device (iPhone, Apple TV). What it doesn't have, however, is an App Store full of console-level games. Yes, you'll find great games on it, but they're mostly mobile games, not games you'll find on Windows PCs, PlayStation, or even the Nintendo Switch. It's certainly enough for normal players, console players, at whom the console should of course aim, but turn their noses up at them.

On paper, the Switch is a weaker rival to the iPhone and iPad, but it is popular for its ecosystem of games. If Apple wants to make its own portable console, it must first ensure that it has enough engaging games and treat Apple Arcade as just an extra. But it is a fact that the original speculation also talks about the conclusion of an agreement on the production of titles from world developers (Ubisoft). Just as it partnered with some developers to bring back classic iOS games to Apple Arcade, perhaps it's time for it to open up its service to big game creators, regardless of any console ambitions. iPhone, iPad, Mac computers and Apple TV are already compatible with PlayStation and Xbox joysticks, so if you're content with games from the App Store, you have proven full control here. So you don't really need Apple's own console, more like the games. But wouldn't it be great to have some gaming accessories directly from Apple itself?
