Magazine AppleInsider came with a report based on a patent granted by the US Patent and Trademark Office that future iPhones could notify users that they have a cracked screen. But when we think about it, is this the technology we really want?

One of the common problems faced by iPhone owners is damage to the screen - whether it's just the cover glass or the display itself. Apple tries hard to ensure that its glasses are really high-quality and sufficiently durable, which is also evidenced by the development of the so-called Ceramic Shield glass, which was first used in the iPhone 12. Crash tests then fairly reliably proved that this glass really lasts a little more than that previous.

It's about money

If the screen itself breaks, there's not much to worry about, as it will render the phone unusable. But if only its cover glass breaks, then of course it depends on how much. However, many users do not worry too much about it, and if only small cracks are present, they continue to use the phone. The prices of new glasses are relatively high, the newer the model, the higher, of course, and the less they want to pay for service intervention.

Corning's Harrodsburg, Kentucky plant producing Ceramic Shield glass:

So, in most cases, you know you have a broken display and it's up to you to take the problem to service or continue to use the phone until you break it more. However, according to the patent, Apple intends to implement a crack detection resistor in iPhones so you know you have one on the display glass even if you can't see it yet.

According to patent, which carries a literal translation of “Electronic Device Display with Monitoring Circuits Using Resistance to Detect Cracks,” the technology is intended to address not only future iPhones, but also those with bendable and otherwise flexible displays. It is possible to experience damage with them even with normal use. And I ask, do I really want to know this?

iPhone 12

Of course not. If I can't see the crack, I'm living in blissful ignorance. If I can't see her and my iPhone notifies me that she's there, I'll become very anxious. Not only will I look for it, but it also tells me that the next time I drop my iPhone, I really have something to look forward to. In the case of new iPhone models, replacing the display glass with a new original one normally costs around CZK 10. How much will the puzzle cost? Better not know.

More possible uses

As we know Apple, there could also be an absurd situation where the phone tells you: “Look, you have a cracked screen. I'd rather turn it off and not use it until you have it replaced.” Of course, the technology will also cost something, so it will have to be reflected in the price of the device itself. But would anyone really care about such information?

Apple patent

In the case of a mobile phone, I really dare to believe that no one. But then there is the mention of the Apple Car, in which the technology contained in the patent could be used on the windshield of the car. Here, in theory, it could make a lot more sense, but let's all put our hands on our hearts and say that even if we see that tiny spider on it, we are not eager to go to the service center anyway. Apple churns out one patent after another, and most of them will not actually be realized in a device. In this case, I dare say that it would really be a good thing.
