For a long time now, there have been rumors about the arrival of an advanced AR/VR headset from Apple. This headset should be completely self-contained and work independently of your other Apple products, while still offering all the capabilities thanks to the use of powerful Apple Silicon chips. At least the apple growers initially counted on this. But the latest news shows that it is likely to be quite different.

portal The Information reported that at least the first generation of the product will be less capable than first thought. For this reason, the headset will be completely dependent on the Apple phone for more demanding operations. Moreover, the problem is quite simple. The Cupertino giant has already completed the Apple AR chip that will power these smart glasses, but it does not offer the Neural Engine. The Neural Engine is subsequently responsible for working with artificial intelligence and machine learning. For this reason, it is necessary for the iPhone to lend its performance to the headset, which can easily cope with more demanding operations.

A great AR/VR headset concept from Apple (Antonio DeRosa):

However, the Apple AR chip will completely handle wireless data transmission, power management of the device and process high-resolution video, probably up to 8K, thanks to which it can still offer a first-class visual experience. At the same time, it is possible that the headset will be completely dependent on the iPhone. Sources well-versed in the development of the product informed that the chip should also offer its own CPU cores. In practice, this could mean only one thing – the product will also work independently, but in a slightly limited form.

Apple View concept

It is still important to think that this is not such a big problem. It's already safe to assume that the headset will be in development for a while, so it's likely to be several generations before Apple comes up with a truly standalone device. In such a case, however, it will not be the first time. The same was the case with the Apple Watch, which in its first generation was heavily dependent on the iPhone. Only later did they get an independently functioning Wi-Fi/Cellular connection and even later their own App Store.

When will Apple introduce an AR/VR headset?

In conclusion, a very simple question is offered. When will Apple actually introduce its AR/VR headset? The latest news is that the development of the main chip has been completed and has entered the test production phase. However, TSMC, which produces Apple chips, encountered various problems in this case - allegedly, the image processing sensor is too large, which causes complications. For this reason, there is talk among apple enthusiasts that we are at least a year away from the mass production of chips.

Several sources subsequently agree on the arrival of the device sometime in 2022. In any case, we are still several months away from that, during which practically anything can happen, which in theory can significantly delay the arrival of the headset. So at the moment we can only hope that we will see it as soon as possible.
