Yesterday could be described as a holiday for Apple fans, because in addition to the HomePod mini smart speaker, the new iPhone 12 was also presented at the Keynote. The fact that it is not a revolutionary update probably did not surprise anyone, but the removal of the charging adapters and EarPods, both for the new iPhone 12 and older iPhones 11, XR and SE. Why did Apple resort to this step and did the company make another mistake?

Smaller, thinner, less bulky, but still at the same price

According to Apple Vice President Lisa Jackson, there are over 2 billion power adapters in the world. Therefore, including them in the package would allegedly be unnecessary and non-ecological, in addition, users are gradually switching to wireless charging. As for the wired EarPods, most users often put them in a drawer and never come back to them. The Californian giant says that thanks to the absence of an adapter and headphones, it was possible to create a smaller package, saving up to 2 million tons of carbon annually. On paper it looks like Apple is behaving like a benevolent company, but there is one big question mark hanging in the air.

Not every user is the same

According to the Californian giant, removing the power adapter and headphones will save a lot of material. It could be agreed that the vast majority of phone owners already own more than one adapter, and headphones most likely as well. As for more demanding users, they will of course buy some more expensive headphones and leave the EarPods in the box or at the bottom of a drawer. Users who are satisfied with the headphones that come with their Apple phones probably don't need to replace the exact same piece of hardware with a new one. These are examples of individuals who are simply not affected by the absence of an adapter and headphones in the iPhone package. On the other hand, there is a large portion of people who simply need an adapter and headphones, for several reasons. Some individuals may want to have an adapter available in every room, and when it comes to headphones, it's nice to have at least one in stock in case the original one stops working. I must also not leave out the group of people who sell the charger and adapter with their old devices and therefore do not have adapters at home.

In addition, it will be more complicated for owners of another phone to switch to the iPhone, as they will not find a Lightning to USB-A cable in the package, but only a Lightning to USB-C cable. And frankly, the vast majority of people still don't own an adapter or computer that has a USB-C connector. So you have to buy an adapter for a phone that costs tens of thousands of crowns less, which costs 590 CZK from Apple, just like EarPods. In total, for a phone that is not cheap at all, you have to pay about another thousand and a half.

If ecology, why not a discount?

Honestly, compared to the competition, iPhones did not bring anything revolutionary. Although these are still high-end machines with great equipment, this was also true in 2018 and 2019. Android users or other potential buyers are most likely to be put off by the absence of an adapter and headphones, which, however, was not reflected in the price at all. At this point, it doesn't matter which iPhone you get - you simply won't find the adapter or headphones in the package anymore. So, if you expected that the total price would decrease with the removal of accessories, you are wrong. It is the same compared to last year, and even higher for some phones. The argument that this is an ecological step would be understandable once again if Apple reduced the price even slightly. The only good news is that the removal of the adapters will not affect the packaging of the iPads. What do you think about the step of removing adapters? Let us know in the comments.
