For many years, Apple's iPhones have been among the leaders not only in endurance per charge, but also in how long their batteries last in ideal condition. It is certainly not common for the manufacturer to subsequently modify the originally stated values. Apple has now done it and given us clear evidence that its batteries are among the best.

Apple specifically he announced, that it retested its entire iPhone 15 portfolio and found that it had slightly undersized their batteries in terms of longevity. He stated that it takes 80 charge cycles before their condition drops to 500% of life. However, he has now substantially increased this limit to 1 cycles.

However, for previous generations, it still says that iPhone 14 and older batteries are designed to retain 80% of their original capacity after 500 full charge cycles. For all models, the exact percentage of capacity depends on how regularly the devices are used and charged. If you had no idea what one cycle means, Apple explains it concretely as follows:

“When you use your iPhone, its battery goes through charging cycles. You complete one charge cycle when you use an amount that represents 100 percent of the battery's capacity. The full charge cycle is normalized between 80 percent and 100 percent of the original capacity to account for the expected reduction in battery capacity over time.”

The exact number of cycles

Unless your iPhone is somehow damaged as a result of a fall, its biggest Achilles heel is the battery - not for a single charge, but just in terms of lifespan/condition. Even if the device still manages your demands, and Apple offers it long support for many years, if you don't update it to a newer one, sooner or later you'll have to replace the battery anyway. If you were to charge it once a day, then 1 days here of course means more than two and a half years.

That Apple focuses more on the battery is evidenced by the news in the 4th beta of iOS 17.4. If you go to Settings a Battery, you will no longer have to click on the offer here Battery health and charging, to detect it and to determine possible charging optimizations (iPhone 15 and later only). So it saves you one extra click. But when you open the fitness menu, you'll also see the exact number of cycles, something you could only guess at until now. Here you will also learn about the battery, when it was manufactured and when it was first used.
