In our throwback today, we'll remember the day the UNIVAC computer was delivered to the US Census Bureau. This happened in March 1951, but this machine had to wait for some time to be put into operation. In the second part, we recall the virtual interactive encyclopedia Encarta from Microsoft's workshop.

UNIVAC computer (1951)

On March 30, 1951, the UNIVAC computer was delivered to the US Census Bureau. The name UNIVAC was short for "UNIVersal Automatic Computer", and it was the first commercial mass-produced computer to be manufactured in the United States. The computer was put into operation on June 14, 1951. J. Presper Eckert and John Mauchly were behind the design of the UNIVAC computer. The delivery of the first UNIVAC to the Census Bureau was accompanied by a ceremony held at the Eckert–Mauchl factory.

Encarta Ends (2009)

On March 30, 2009, the Encarta service was discontinued. Microsoft Encarta was a multimedia digital encyclopedia operated by Microsoft from 1993 to 2009. Encarta was originally distributed on CD-ROM and DVD, but was later made available on the web through an annual subscription. After some time, Microsoft also released some of the articles on Encarta for free reading. Encarta has grown steadily over the years, and in 2008 you could find more than 62 articles, lots of photos, illustrations, music videos, videos, interactive content, maps, and more. Under the Encarta brand, encyclopedias were published in German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and a number of other languages.
