In today's episode of our series called Back to the Past, we will recall only one single event, which was very significant both for Apple and for the music industry. We remember the iTunes Music Store, which was launched on April 28, 2003.

The iTunes Music Store is Coming (2003)

On April 28, 2003, Apple launched its online music store - the iTunes Music Store. At the time of its launch, the iTunes Music Store offered individual songs for 99 cents. Users could download them to their iPods with the help of the appropriate software. Apple said in its official press release at the time that it was a "revolutionary online music store". The service offered users the opportunity to compile their own music compilations and burn them to CD, completely free of charge. “Listeners don't want to be treated like criminals, and artists don't want their valuable music stolen. The iTunes Music Store offers a breakthrough solution for both parties,” said Steve Jobs in connection with the launch of the iTunes Music Store.

At the time of launch, the iTunes Music Store contained more than two hundred thousand songs from large and famous labels such as BMG, EMI, Sony Music Entertainment, Universal or Warner Music. Through the iTunes Music Store, users could search for any song by title, artist, or album, browse entire music collections by genre, artist, or album, and listen to free thirty-second samples of individual songs. At first, many people looked at the iTunes Music Store rather skeptically, but the Apple music store soon managed to fight its way to the top of the charts and gradually also expand the portfolio of its functions and the library of content, which soon ceased to be limited only to music.
